Which iPhone 16 will you be getting?

I think I might have already asked this question but I've forgotten the answer.

On the Apple website it says if you buy the current iPhone on finance over 24 months you can upgrade whenever you want by returning the current phone and then the new phone will be sent to you with the credit moved over.

If I am understanding things correctly that should mean that I can get an iPhone 16 Pro Max on finance now and then immediately upgrade to the iPhone 17 Pro Max as soon as it is released. Is that correct?

Well, I was that impressed with the MBA I got at the weekend, I've decided to switch my phone too, just got a 16 Pro 256gb.

Going to take some faff doing things like migrating away from Google photos, but think it will be worth it.

Trying not to think about how expensive it will be to move my desktop to Mac :p

One of us! One of us!

Why not just keep google photos? Arguably it’s better than a he apple photos app.

I do a lot of heavy video editing on my desktop (4k50 10-bit). I think I’d need to at least go for the top end M4 Pro Mini, if not a studio.

Does it work ok? Been a long time since I last used apple stuff and I remember it being a pain in the butt with integration outside the ecosystem
Apples Photos app works fine, as does Googles on apple devices.

If you’re used to google and have google drive I’d stay with that. iCloud file explorer on iOS isn’t the greatest at times.

The basic M4 CPU would probably be ok, but you’d need to attach a large external NVMe drive to your MBA when video editing.

I have a bit of a mishmash. Most files are on Onedrive. Photos are in Google photos.

I’d quite happily consolidate everything into the apple ecosystem.

But baby steps, currently migrating 2fa codes to MS authenticator….going to take a while.

I use quite a lot of AI tools (sharpening) that rinses my 4070 pretty hard. I’ll have to stick da Vinci on the MBA and see how it copes.
You could try the free trial of Final Cut Pro that'll take advantage of Apple hardware. Even if you don't end up leaving Da Vinci a free trial is worth a try.

I’m pretty sure Da Vinci uses the apple hardware fine, I have a studio license so won’t be switching.

Found my first major annoyance with the Apple switch. Streaming Apple Music, over airplay to my Wiim Pro Plus is absolute garbage quality. I was planning to switch from Tidal but this may be a dealbreaker for me.

Have you set the playback quality in Apple Music to HiRes Lossless in settings?

Edit: Just read about it. That doesn't seem to be the problem. Not sure on that one.

This might be worth looking into:

Yes it’s showing lossless in Apple Music.

It seems that AirPlay doesn’t actually support streaming lossless at all, it compresses everything, sounds bloody awful.

Thought decent audio would be something Apple would get right, pretty disappointing.

Try Airfoil I linked above to see if that is any better. I've never used AirPlay but it seems Airfoil supports other streaming protocols.

I just read the specs for your device and you can use Airfoil to stream using Google Cast Audio or DNLA.

In terms of storage device speed requirements for video editing this is my external NVMe, and it isn’t one of the fastest but is still fine for all formats.

Yeah it's not the disk performance that's the bottleneck for me, but GPU performance. I use a lot of AI upscaling that absolutely rags the GPU. Tbh I can just keep the PC for gaming and video editing, not too much of a pain in the arse to switch....although annoyingly my desktop won't do DP over the USB dock.

I'm installing Da Vinci on the MBA atm, but will need an external NVME before I can really use it. I work with ~100GB of source files for a typical video.
