It really does all boil down to the price of the X at the end of the day. If they priced it at £700 then no-one would have batted an eyelid and everyone would be getting one.

I'll be getting the X because I love the design, think iOS is a continued great experience, it will have an OLED screen so watching stuff on it will be amazing and the camera in it will be top notch and will be a nice upgrade for me from the 7.

I've voted 64GB Space grey. Currently having a 256GB 7+ but not even using half of the space. I wish there was a 128GB and 256GB version cause right now it looks like apple are forcing people to get the 256GB one

256GB Space Grey, I'd like to think I'd go different and get a Silver this time but I know come order time I won't :p

I see what you did there

Why'd you put the iMac in the loft? Seems short-sighted, it'll run Windows just as well as any other all-in-one will.
If you look at my sig I built myself a Windows box. I had fitted an SSD into the iMac but that is now residing in my Windows machine. That leaves my mid-2011 iMac in almost bog standard form. It does however still work as good as the day I bought it. However, we only have enough room for the one computer.

I've done the same recently on the TV front but I still get wow moments with the OLED TV, not sure I've ever had that from a phone tbh.

I'm on a 6 so I've got as good a reason as most to upgrade but I still think what would the X really do for me even if used it all day.

TBH I'm on the 6 as well and a similar much as I'm thinking "ooh, fancy new phone" the reality is the 6 is perfectly fine. Unlike previous Android phones I've had in the past! It works, it runs all the apps I need/want and the phone camera is adequate.

The better camera on the X is nice, the full screen is nice, the new design is nice. Face ID is worth waiting to see how it works compared to Touch ID (which I use all the time). The issue is it's not going to make a big difference unlike the move from a two year old HTC One to the 6, of the Samsung Omnia 7 to the One, or the Touch HD to the Omnia.

I think that is the issue Apple (and other manufacturers) are having. Phones work almost too well now. Gone are (generally) the days where you needed a new phone every 18 months as the old one either broke or slowed down to a crawl, or was left behind in tech advancements.

I'd rather spend the £1000 on a flight somewhere nice instead. :p Perhaps I'll wait until the iPhone 9 is released, unless I break this one.

It'll be odd though going from the same OS to the same OS on a new phone though. The issue is there really isn't any other OS that I'd consider right now. Android just isn't up to scratch IMO if you're not interested in modding it. WP is dead and doesn't have the apps anyway and other than that there's really nothing available.

Galaxy can do all of these for less. The old chestnut of iOS v Android or MacOS v Windows 10 is now a long dead issue. They all do the same job with equal competence. Apple are simply fleecing their customer base, it's as simple as that. I'll hang onto my iPhone 7 until the wheels drop off.

A Ford Mondeo would have done the same job as your German car, so why did you pay more for the German car?

I remain open minded. Things that put me off are:

1) App support. Gonna be a long time before all my apps support the native res. Do you remember that BS such as the old met office weather app!!!
2) Display support: All that letterboxing will annoy me, what's the point of the full display if lots of stuff is letterboxed?
3) Damaging the phone. It's expensive and I won't be happy if I damage it, not impressed with the mirror finish of the casing which won't stay that way for long.
4) Losing abilities such as wifi analysing and file transfers.
5) Hardware. I went through 3 x 7 plus phones last year due to hissgate and I've had previous issues with iPhones before that. What will the build quality be like this year?
6) Pixel 2 launch (https://madeby.google.com/askmore/)

The biggest issue I have with the X is that they have clearly gone for the notch design for the sake of being different. I really love the look of it and the notch looks cool, it just doesn’t work when you come to the software. Hiding the notch in the way a lot of designs have done would appear to be an admission that they aren’t “proud” of it.

As soon as you turn it landscape the whole thing falls apart. Videos and games are the least of its issues. It’s things like webpages that look ****. The only saving grace is that I only ever turn my phone sideways to view videos.

I’m just stunned that the software didn’t take precidence over the notch being prominent.

I own an iPhone 7 256GB SIM free, over last few years I've always purchased a phone outright. Last one I found somebody selling cheaper not long after launch, otherwise it's from Apple store.

When the S8 launched I was very tempted, I had tried the S7 edge for a while after selling my iPhone 6 but went back to Apple for 6S. I loved the S7 Edge but typical tech bordem got to me.

Up until last weekend I had held off with the S8+ because I wanted TouchID under the screen, once the leaks pretty much confirmed it was not going to happen I swung by Vodafone who offered me an incredibly good Galaxy S8+ deal to upgrade from my SIM only plan with them. Decided to take it and can't say I regret my decision.

I think the iPhone X looks good and since having the S8+ and using face detection which has been great for me (and no doubt even better on the iPhone X), I haven't missed TouchID. That shocked me, as I thought I would.

I've got two huge issues with the iPhone X...
  • Price. I'm used to paying allot for a phone SIM free and while £1000 is allot, I could afford it and get it by the wife. I truly believe if you like something, price can become less important. I bought a HTC Vive, for me the price was acceptable for what I wanted. However..... £1000 for a mobile phone is just something I'm not willing to spend, it doesn't represent enough to me. Especially as I prefer the S8 visually.
  • That notch. The space used for the cameras and sensors is just horrendous, i think it completely ruins the athestics of the device. This is a personal thing but I've seen many UX / UI complaining about it. I'd of much preferred it to be more like the S8, I realise this isn't likely to be possible due to the sheer amount of sensors they're using.. To me personally it shows a real design compromise to accommodate the tech they needed to make FaceID work the way they wanted, which is fair enough.. It's just for £1000 I don't want compromises.
I do think over time the iPhone X will be seen as a device whichs physical design is impacted by the tech available of the time, essentially a device Apple had to make rather than wanted to make. further revisions should fix the notch issue as they make those sensors fit into a much smaller bezel and I have no doubt they'll bring TouchID back under the screen. Itll be "The new iPhone which now covers you all multiple biometric authentication"

1) App support. Gonna be a long time before all my apps support the native res.

It took me two days to update our fairly complex (4+ years of development) app to support the iPhone X.

Any modern iOS app should already be resolution independent. Any app that supports the iPhone 6/7/8+ properly will support the iPhone X's resolution without any changes.

There's a bit of work to do to stop content being cut off by the sensor bump and rounded corners but it's not much. Our app had some legacy code that meant it wasn't completely straightforward but most apps won't have these problems. Tick a couple of boxes, change a few drop-downs and you're away.

Maybe I can pick this up second hand in a few months for a decent price.

But I like my phones "perfect" free of any blemishes and no battery wear Lol
