***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

The thread on my Muhle R89 is failing, and it's only a matter of time before it gives up the ghost!

What would you replace it with? The Edwin Jagger DE89 is very similar and has great reviews like the Muhle.

It's tempting to simply replace it with another, especially as it's been great since the day I purchased it, but the itch to try something new has set in ;)

Edwin Jagger 3ONE6 stainless steel does look like the final boos of razors, it looks good too, especially in that post of yours @rG-tom

The Edwin Jagger DE89’s threads are even worse than the Muhle’s. It’s a great shave, but it’s thinly-plated pot metal.

I 1st started DE shaving with a Muhle R89 and over the years have bought several other handles but it's still my go to for the easiest DE shave as it's not too aggressive.

I tend to use Taylor's creams most of the time but the Body Shop Aloe cream is good (shame everywhere is struggling to stock it although it is available online), I also have a Mitchell's Wool Fat soap and the missus bought a £2 Wilkinson Sword soap from Tesco which isn't too bad.

In a bit of a hairy faced panic, I've caved in and purchased a temporary razor just to put me on :D or so I thought!

It's surprisingly good -> https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BVB3Y76J?

I didn't like it at first because the handle feels very light, almost like hollow thin metal or plastic coated metal, the handles weight is noticeable compared to how heavy the head is, but it works great.

I'm not 100% committed yet, but this one will probably be my next purchase as I've read lots of good information about it, it's often on offer much cheaper and I personally think it looks good -> https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07HM9D1BN?

After ten or so years of rocking a berd I’ve decided to return to my clean routes of clean shaven. Is anyone able to recommend some shaving soap/brush etc? Feel like a treat as opposed to Gillette shave gel.

Have a look at connaught shaving? I've bought a load of blades over the years from them. I'm about to buy some shaving cream as my last tube of l'oreal is almost at the end.

I've just ordered some shaving creams from Connaught:
Taylor of Old Bond Street - Cedarwood (150ml), then the following 10ml sample pots:
Taylor of Old Bond Street - Jermyn Street
Taylor of Old Bond Street - Lime Zest
Extro - Terra Deglis Del 1927
Extro - Pesca
Extro - Legno di Sandalo

The L'oreal protective cream I have at the moment is basically a heavy Cederwood essential oil based scent. The two different brands have different bases trying a few of each allows me to see what works as a base, then worry about the scent. Quite looking forward to it oddly.

Nice, I’ll have a look. Thanks mate.

How are you getting on with that?

My first order from them I basically did a spread across all their trial packs and added additional blades. I think I ended up with over 100 blades.. took a while but quickly found the blades that worked for me and those that didn't. Also worth getting one the feather blade disposal tins. They last along time (the first keeps going so the second is sat empty!).

In the end I found Feather New Hi-Stainless platinum plated worked best. Other good ones I found were the Astra Platinum. The pack decent ones were the Gillette 7o'clock (but they're russian so no buy for me). The rest were ok and the worst for me was the Treet blade. So my second blade order was ten packs of Feather Hi-Stainless ... which will last a while!

I'm using an Edwin Jagger DE89BL if I remember correctly - it' definitely the 89 and looks identical.

I found that the supermarket sold brands just didn't stop the blade from leaving rashes - that included Wilkinson soap, king of shave gels etc. Only when I found L'oreal protective cream (it doesn't foam) that it solved the problem and smelt good. Now it seems l'oreal has stopped making it and there's none on the shelves.. so I'm just experimenting with new sets of creams to find both something that the base works but also smells good.

I rarely encounter problems nowadays shaving, though recently I have moved into a new works accommodation where I spend a few nights a week and it has very hard water. To the point it dries my skin out completely. I don't get a as close a shave, and i'm always coming out with razor bumps.

Anyone have product recommendations or rituals to mitigate against horrible calcy water?

We have hard water here, the Mrs always complained about it. The sort of water that a splash leaves scale deposit.

I'm sort of in the same boat. I found the soaps and gels you can normally get leave rashes etc. Until I found the now discontinued L'oreal protective shaving cream that solved the problem. Unlike all the soaps and creams I tried it doesn't lather so it's thicker. So I'm currently about to try some more creams with different bases to see how they work.
