Anyone know roughly how many comfortable shaves a gillette proglide actually does. The company claim it is good for 30 shaves which sounds way too good to be true

My guess would be none from that monstrosity. It has far to many blades.

Hi all…

I normally use a trimmer and Wilkinson sword or Gillette razor for detailing; depending on what I was given at Christmas.

I rarely use the razor; just once or twice a week for the side burns and fluffy cheeks… working from home helps too. :)

I discovered that disposable straight razors exists, at first I was a tad wary as I never used one before and was worried about cutting myself to shreds.. but after a few weeks of using them.. I found it to be much better, quicker, cleaner and my main beef with razors.. there’s no hairs getting trapped between the 20 billion blades that they keep adding to, while the price of the heads keep going up!

I got myself a tweezerman set now, but that also uses custom changeable razors heads… so I was thinking of treating myself to a more traditional cut throat razor.

Nothing too fancy yet, I’m still deciding if this is a fad of mine or if this is going to be the way forward.

Any suggestions/recommendations? I don’t think I’m at that stage where I’m going to get a leather belt for sharpening one.. so one with changeable blades please..

Thanks in advance..
I think you're talking about a shavette, I bought myself a BlueBeards Revenge one and also 100 Derby shavette blades from Shaving Shack (now closed down) website and still have loads of blades yet, you can buy double edge blades and snap them in half as well but I only use them for shaving the back of my neck because I find it too difficult to keep it steady when shaving the other side of my face to risk doing my chin.

These are single edge blades

Thanks... I came across that term on youtube a few days after I made the post. I didn't know they were called something different.

I guess I'm looking for recommenations for shavettes... :)

Just another question, the razors that disposable and tweeterman uses have a bummpy surface and it seems to help me not cut myself... are all razors for shavettes like this? or do I have to look at for a particaluar kind?

I'm sat here now a baldy old coot trying facial hair to compensate. I just look like a tramp trying to keep it looking nice and even tbh.
Which trimmer would you all recommed?

Recently I picked up one of these www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007714467767.html?

I'd normally shave my face with my DE and head with an electric trimmer very much like the Remington Quick Cut (Replica?) but with this new 7D shaver I've not had to use either in over a month.

So far so good, it's proved to be a fantastic shaver, it's a very close cut, not as good as a razor blade, but I can safely shave my head and face all in one go, and it looks and feels great.

I've just purchased and received a spare head for it for the future, should it go blunt or get damaged etc, it only cost me £20 for the shaver set and spare blade too which is a bargain!

A stainless steel shavette from Dovo is a good starter and inexpensive. I use it in conjunction with Tonedo blades, as they are sharp enough without being lethal. Don't try a DE blade as they are way to sharp, and without practice your slicing up things.

I use the shavette for head, and a DE for cheeks and neck line.

Cutthroat or shavette takes a little more practice compared to a DE ( you let the weight of the DE and sharpness work together, you don't apply pressure)

Shavette your aiming for a 30% angle with none to slight pressure. I would watch a few YouTube videos.

I've bought my first ever DE razor, just a cheap one Gilette King C as it was on sale. Tried on my cheeks and a neck with a little bit of water. To sum up I have now red cheeks and cuts on neck.
I might read up a little bit more of the way I should treat that beast.

Warm up face, good shaving soap/cream, then learn the key steps little strokes (0.5-1cm) down the grain of the hairs. You can't do one long cut then repeat.

As a starting point you could try Taylors of Old Street shaving cream (the cedar wood for example). I found that none of the "King" gels/creams/foams or any others like Wilkinsons sword soap worked for me (rash and cuts). I found the cream gives an easier shave than the soaps.

I've found connaught to be excellent: https://www.connaughtshaving.com/tayscb.html and you can get a little sample tub that lasts for 3-4 shaves for most of the different creams etc. The different creams have different makeups so it may be worth trying a few samples.
I've also bought (in orders of ten 10 packs) my blades from there too - I can recommend the Feather Platinum blades after trying the majority of blades they have in a trial pack a couple of orders ago.

For the occasional quick rough shave I use the electric hair clippers without a comb on. Gets rid of the whiskers fast.

Recently switched from an old (15 years?) Merkur 34C to an Edwin Jagger 3ONE6 Double Edge Safety Razor Stainless Steel (the Knurled fully stainless steel version for £85, not the plastic handled version which is £20 cheaper).

I realised I was getting so many nicks and cuts with the Merkur 34C, even when changing to a fresh blade. It was time for an upgrade.

The 3ONE6 is night and day different. It's just a brilliant razor - but it's not perfect.

Positive:
+ Incredibly smooth shave, no chatter, very clean design.

Negative:
- Compared to the Merkur 34C, changing blades or rinsing the head feels more delicate & dangerous. The 3ONE6 is a 3-part piece. On the Merkur 34C it's really simple to loosen the head simply by rotating the end of the handle. On the 3ONE6, you have to hold the bottom of the head and rotate carefully to loosen everything. Your fingers get close to the blade. I hadn't realised how clever the Merkur was when it comes to this.

I have no regrets upgrading, the shave quality is excellent in comparison. But I only wish they had a better head release mechanism.

[EDIT]
After a few days use, I'm getting accustomed to loosening the head/changing blades - it's simply a matter of holding the head above & below in like a pinch grip, then unscrewing the handle. Not that difficult but still a little more risky. I'm sure I'll get used to it.
