I am about to embark on building a HTPC for my home cinema build.

Searching for mediaportal brings up 100's of threads.

Thought it woulld be beneficial for anyone wanting to play with mediaportal to have one thread with tweaks tips and screenies of skins etc...

So please post your Mediaportal experiences along with with info news and tweaks on the best looking skins etc...

I have a question for anyone already using it...

What's the best/coolest skin?

Use GB-PVR myself, one of the best written & supported pieces of (donationware) software I've used in a long time. Found Mediaportal too unstable (so annoying to miss recordings) in the past though I've heard it is a lot better now. Lots of people do use it so if no luck here then the Mediaportal forums are very active.

I love it but I just can't get my head around the new TV engine! Way too much work to set up.

I hope version 2 will be better when it comes, if it ever comes, or both...or all three!

The TV engine isn't as hard to setup as it seems. I'm running mediaportal on a HTPC and it's good, though not as bulletproof as VMC or WMC unfortunately. However, the extra features and speed make up for this. I'm not with the machine at the moment, but i'm using a black skin (its a popular one, cant remember the name) in 16:9 format. No other tweaks were needed except for 3rd party tv guide downloading as the included one I couldnt get to work.

I'm also using a Microsoft MCE remote with it with no issues, its supported out the box.
