***The Official OcUK Writers Thread***

Finished the first draft of my third book in the "Songs of..." Trilogy - Songs of Love and Loss. This one is no novella or short story. At over 40,000 words it is my first novel.

To celebrate Songs of Death and Destiny is going on sale for £1.25.

Got to get editing now. I hate editing and really don't look forward to editing something that big. Hopefully it will be published before the end of October/early November .

Just for anyone contemplating starting up.

I'm reasonably down the path of becoming a writer, I've had work performed at the BBC, recommendations from BAFTA-endorsed companies and have a semi-respectable body of work.

It's now almost 10pm on Saturday night, I'm sat with a glass of wine printing out copies of scripts and cover letters to send to anywhere that'll take it while fighting back tears at the futility of it all.

Writing is great don't get me wrong, but right now I wish I was perfectly happy working in a corner shop for the rest of my life.

Just to add to this harsh reality:

It's absolutely true.

Writing for a living is a possibility, but it's a slim one. It's a long, hard slog -- and while you may make money from it, making enough is tantamout to a miracle these days. I know a good number of writers whose name may show up on shelves as you browse at Waterstones, but who spend their evenings complaining about how hellish their "day jobs" (read: full time employment) are.

Your first book being accepted and sent to press isn't the sudden gateway to a cabin-owning life of secluded bliss. Please remember that.

Well, I'm doing National November Writer's Month, and it has already opened my eyes to a few good ideas. The most intriguing being to banish your inner editor and just write, although it's highly unlikely that I'll be able to match the 1,600 words a day target!
