The official Philips BDM4065UC thread

I've got chromapure and a Chroma5 pro colorimeter...but I've not used it for ages and won't get round to calibrating this until Christmas probably! Colours look good out of the box, but that's so subjective tbh.

I've not really noticed "smearing" when gaming, but I am more conscious of the refresh rates - it's difficult to quantify though. I find it acceptable but I do notice motion issues more - what's difficult to tell is whether that's down to the monitor or the fact that it's a HUGE monitor to be sitting 2 feet away from, so things are more noticeable?

Thank you both spoffle and Smurfin for those excellent and detailed replies!

Sounds like the pixel shape won't be an issue, it's photo and video editing I'm looking at, not CAD work (thankfully!).

That's a good argument about the pricing, it's true of course that larger TV sizes are much cheaper, I just didn't think they had the quality of a monitor screen.

Smurfin, can I just ask you a couple of things as you have one.

Do you know how accurate the colours are? I use a Dell 2709 at the moment which is 5 years old now so I imagine that even a budget panel these days it's probably on a par or better than 5 year old tech!

Do you get noticeable smearing when gaming? I've never really noticed lag that much, either that or I've adapted to it, I do game but not massively competitively, but it would be a pain if it's there.

Not so worried about the text issue as it's mostly static when looking at it.

I have my monitor on a varidesk at the moment so I can adjust from a sitting to standing position, that puts it 12cm off the desk surface at it's lowest extension...if I went for this I think I'd have to find a solution to that otherwise I'll soon get a crick in the neck!
No problem! I'd just like to add though, even CAD work wouldn't be hindered by the non square pixels, because in CAD everything is measured out in the software you use, so as long as your measurements in the software correct and you're not eyeballing it, it'll be fine. It really is a complete non issue. I can't think of a single reason why it'd cause problems to be honest.

As for TV pricing, well due to their size they have to use somewhat decent panels, you couldn't get away with using TN in a TV due to the extreme gamma shift.

The problem with TVs has been the pixel size and excessive processing or controller boards used. The panels themselves are fine. It's just that with UHD, the pixels are down to a size where it makes the larger panels much more suitable for close up viewing than before. A 50" UHD display has pixels roughly the same size as a 24" 1080P monitor, and a 40" has pixels the same size as those on a 27" WQHD monitor (within 5%).

Nearly everything you have described will be no different to existing monitors you're used to if you're used to using IPS or VA panels anyway. As I don't touch TN panels at all, I have no issues or concerns with what you have outlined already.

Agreed - nothing should really be a surprise, unless you're used to TN! And if anyone has a TN panel, the move to IPS/VA is nothing short of "wow" in terms of general usage.

You two are just full of knowledge! :D

I have just had a thought, spoffle, would it be possible for you to measure the depth of the monitor including the stand? I have this big varidesk:

sat on my desk so I'm wondering if would fit behind it or not, I have about 11cm to spare at the front of my desk to move the varidesk forward!

I would go to a 5k superwide curved VA panel with G-Sync when it comes out (along with a pair of 20nm GPUs in SLI)....I wonder how long we'll be waiting and how deep your pockets will need to be!

In the meantime, this is a great monitor if multi-purpose is your game.

I unfortunately don't have one to measure! I will be picking one (3) up in the future though when the prices stabilise.

The sooner G-Sync dies, the better! We don't want any of that proprietary nonsense!

I think multi-purpose pretty much nails it. Also from your colour calibration equipment it sounds like you have an eye for colour and if it works for you that sounds good to me!

I've just been comparing the specs between it any my Dell 2709...the Philips seems to win as well! The Dell is also a VA panel which I hadn't realised and I haven't any issues with it at all, so this definitely sounds like an upgrade. I understand your comments on the cone effect but I don't think 1 or 2 inches will matter much when there is that much screen estate to play with!

From the pictures you posted, am I right in thinking you're running it on Windows 8.1? Do you think that would be the best way to go in terms of dealing with scaling issues, rather than trying to use it on a Windows 7.

Whoops sorry, I was mixing you up with Smurfin!

Yeah the prices do seem a bit over the place, it's good that OCUK have confirmed stock and pricing, but it has come in higher than I expected based on the chatter of around £600 or less.

It's unfortunate that they're over £680 with Gibbo talking about £650.

I usually buy from the cheapest place I can find that doesn't have reviews in the toilet.

However if OcUK get them below £600, I might pick one up from them in store.

UPDATE - TURNED "SMARTRESPONSE" TO "OFF" AND PIXEL ORBITING TO "OFF" BELOW NEGATIVES DISAPPEARED.

Apart from grainy photos and vertical colour shift...bare in mind I'm coming from an IPS panel so maybe this is par for the course, it's not awful though. The ghosting was awful, which has been rectified.
Happy buyer from initial impression.

Got mine this morning.

Good accurate business graphics colours, top notch clarity.

Then it all goes wrong...

Photos rather grainy.
Bad ghosting
Terrible colour saturation shift from slightest up/down angle viewing change on photos. (but hardly a problem at all on graphics/office type stuff)

Can't quite decide if this is a good buy or not at this point.

The worst thing is the ghosting of images, when scrolling in Firefox images almost "dry up" like alcohol, that is to say the ghosting is pretty darn prominenet. Something I've never seen before with my Dell U3011 - as in didn't even know it existed, zero ghosting. Feels like an old laptop LCD...

Reminds me of the bad old days of cheap large screens...

We'll see...

Ramble/

*Colour representation really is the dogs danglies considering the price, would just add that.
