The network download speeds are certainly baffling. That 300MB firmware file just completed in 30 seconds for me.

I know both ends of the stick, sometimes PSN will max out my fibre, other times it trickles along.

Indeed. It was done in seconds for me the other night while sometimes game downloads can drag. It is weird and so inconsistent. Most times I don't run into issues on PSN but when it hits it is annoying.

I changed the PS4 to Open DNS expecting it to be another placebo effect, but it actually did make a difference. Not sure how that's even possible, but there we ago. Can only assume it picks the download server differently.

First look at two new licensed pro controllers for PS4

over the last few weeks ive noticed my PS4 isn't automatically downloading game updates anymore, I'm having to manually go through each game and check for updates to get them to download. any ideas on what I could do or which settings to look at?

Make sure you've got everything set according to these instructions.

But it always seemed hit and miss for me anyway. It doesn't start to download things in rest mode anymore even with all the right boxes ticked. That might be something to do with my account not having PS+ but there is another account on the console that does have it, so it should still work.

i'm probably imagining this, but thought i'd read that it only auto updates games played in the last 30 days now.

It could be something like that, I've just had a quick google and results suggest it may only auto update the 10 most recent apps/games you've launched.
