I just lapped my Ultra-120, was quite shocked too see that the base was quite badly 'concaved', should have taken some pics really but after 5 mins sanding the edges were completely copper but the center was still anodised silver coated? (untouched by the sanding).fornowagain said:Thermalright Ultra could do with a little work, rough finish

I'm in two minds to lap it, mine is ever so slightly convex. Apparently thats by design. Not so sure I believe that, nigh on impossible to machine deliberately. Looks more like the base is milled, then distorts after they solder the heatpipes. All I know it touches the IHS center first.Big.Wayne said:I just lapped my Ultra-120, was quite shocked too see that the base was quite badly 'concaved', should have taken some pics really but after 5 mins sanding the edges were completely copper but the center was still anodised silver coated? Ah thats the opposite to mine? Did you do that blue thing with a felt tip to find that out or is it visible by eye?fornowagain said:mine is ever so slightly convex. Apparently thats by design.

Super pi shots dont mean much to me tbh.
Thats right. The base is presumably not heat treated. Just milled from billet. They get it hot, lets out the stress and buckles, goes either up or down. I did blue it yes, came straight off the middle.Big.Wayne said:Ah thats the opposite to mine? Did you do that blue thing with a felt tip to find that out or is it visible by eye?
Azza said:Ill get stable and all that **** done when I want to. Im not going to be runnig prime for 8 hours 'cos Ive got better things to do with my PC.
