***The Official Q6600 Overclocking Thread ***

The energy efficient one is the G0.

Anyway, back to my little nightmare. I've updated the BIOS on my board and tried again.

It failed miserably at 3.4Ghz after about 2 mins of Prime95. So I took the block off and re-applied the paste, this time the small blob in the centre ass opposed to using the card method. Back to 3.4Ghz and it failed instantly, so I took a look at the temps and they were in the high 70's and idleing at about 40. Somethings not right I though. I did however apply it right according to a few guides.

Thinking it's my method of applying paste, I googled & googled for the best method and found this on the Arctic Silver site:

Heat spreader removed showing the location of the cores:

And with it on and how to apply paste for the best results.

So off came the Fusion once more and I removed the other paste. It hadn't reached the edges so perhaps I didn't apply enough.

Anyway, just done it like above and now I've got the following. The temps are a tadge high, but I think I can lower VCore to bring them down. It's set at 1.55 now iirc.

Will do a bit more playing over the coming days but I'm busy in work. Any input/comments greatly appreciated.

If you applied enough paste and it didn't spread very well it's a sure sign that the ihs is concave just like the one below

Yep, that's pretty much the same sort of size that the paste was sitting in. Now there's a slap in the face for me to lap the CPU if I've ever had one.

Where can I get the right sandpaper from? I'm not one for buying stuff like that normally!

Whats speeds are people hitting on the OEM Q6600 chips at the moment people...??

Thinking of placing an order tomorrow?

A lot on good air appear to be hitting 3.6 ghz with around 1.425v, mines does 3.33ghz on default volts with load temps under 50c under a tuniq tower. (Load at 3.6gig is 58c at 1.425v)

Once I get some free time I'm hoping to get it as close to 4ghz as I can.

If I was to go and overclock my 6600 G0 would I see much performance increase in games that are able to take advantage of multi cores?

Just wondering since I don't really need to overclock as such, just if it's going to help Crysis along then i'm all for it :D

Well when I logged on this morning after about 10 hours of Prime they were 67-70 ish. They rose to that after about 30 mins earlier. Once I lap the CPU (and my Fusion, small scratches on it so I want to get it super smooth) I'll do the same with current settings to see what I get.
