*** The Official Steam Deck Thread ***

You’ve perfectly articulated why I’ve not pulled the trigger on the steam deck - I’m not a single launcher gamer and while I am more than capable of doing all the tinkering needed, I don’t really want to.

The reason why the switch is such a fantastic piece of kit despite being grossly underpowered, you can pick it up smash in your favourite overpriced cartridge and play great games.
Whilst I don't disagree whith the switch comment - you can literally do no tinkering / anything at all with the SD and have access to thousands of steam games immediately (cost dependant ofc). The steam library is hardly lacking - but I guess for some there are perhaps certain games which are deal breakers which only work with 3rd party launchers?

It’s not necessarily that the games I want to play don’t work on the steam deck, they probably do (with tinkering) and the steam deck library is perfect like fine.

It’s more that I own games across multiple launchers and while most of my games are on steam, you can often get games for a lower price not on steam. I prefer not to be ‘soft locked’ (without tinkering) into a single platform and I’m not re-buying games on steam that I already own on another launcher.

I couldn’t limit myself to a single store for games. Better to have competition for lower prices. Even for just Steam games there are multiple sources to buy from.

A lot of the non Steam Deck handhelds seem to be moving towards having SteamOS as an option, and if the few reports I've seen of people who have already put SteamOS on their Ally's is anything to go by they do actually get a performance boost over the default Windows install, I guess because there is no bloat. So if you got an Ally then eventually you may well be left with a dilemma of leave Windows on it for launcher convivence, or SteamOS for max performance. But you'd still not have any trackpads, which for me is the absolute deal breaker.

You're not "soft locked" to Steam.

The barrier is in getting Windows software to install and run on Linux. Steam handles this automatically for software installed via the Steam Store. For other software, you have to find your own solution. You can install Windows software on the Deck via Steam (add the installer to Steam as a Non-Steam Game and then run it). Or you can use one of many more streamlined solutions. Once the software is installed, the experience is similar to adding a non-Steam game to Steam in Windows.

Aside from the performance issues and the sleep-wake issues on the Windows version what also got me was the price difference, these are identical machines and yet the Windows version is $130 more expensive. how??????? $130 for a windows licence, even to mass market manufacturers.

Are Microsoft mad? This is one reason i want Linux to be mainstream.

Edit, no, 32GB vs 16GB but still and Windows probably needs that 32GB.

How often do these go on sale? And does stand any chance of getting on when they are?
LCD has been on sale in the summer and I don't believe the OLED has yet. They do tend to sell out quickly and be restocked a few times then sell out again almost immediately.
If you want one and can wait a month you might get a small discount, or not. Best to just buy it and enjoy now IMO.

they had some really nice discounts a few months back on refurbished units. still with 12 months warranty.

I was tempted to get one tbh and give my LCD to my lad but I decided I would rather wait for a next gen one with more performance as well

I think those 2 are equivalently price really. double the ram and double the storage for 130 dollars

compare that to a 256gb Vs 512g steamdeck (or a 64gb Vs 256 GB)

Yeah I'm confused...

It's got double the RAM on the Windows version, for a device where there is shared RAM/VRAM going from 16>32 can be a pretty big deal.

Video says performance is better on steamdeck at low wattage then shows that the 10W on the Legion Go is EXACTLY the same as the Steamdeck @ 15W - perhaps an editing issue? (pause @ 1:50)

You need to be a Youtuber to criticise influencers now?
No but if you criticise and label all youtubers with the same piint brush, then that means you know better than all of them right?

Please make a youtube channel so we can get the correct information from you instead because remember, David2D doesn't actually know what he's talking about like every other tech influencer.

Are you bored or something? I'm not painting *ALL* youtubers with the same brush but yes, I am painting ALL tech-influencers with the same brush. There are plenty of Youtube channels that do excellent tech and hardware analysis out there.
