The Olympic Flame is lit!

Had it on in my classroom in the background this morning.

Saw all the guys in suits waffling on, then the people dressed as ancient Greeks and that little boy with the olive branch as they arsed around... Bell went, I was on break duty, came back in 10 mins later and had missed the flame being lit

Bloody hell you teachers have it so easy. 40 weeks holiday a year then a teacher training day after the holidays AND a TV in your classroom :p

Well, a smartboard with the ability to watch BBC news over the internet, yes. :)

We had it on while they were writing up a science experiment - had to be pretending to do something useful if the Head wandered in ;)

My class are very excited about the Olympics as my brother has been named in the preliminary 16 for the GB volleyball team (12 in the final cut) and he came to visit us a couple of weeks ago, they've got Olympic fever now. It's London 2012 water bottles and lunchbags everywhere you look :D

I have to be honest and say that nothing interests me less than the Olympics being in the UK.

For me it's a like drawing a community challenge in Monopoly which makes you hand over all your hard earned £'s. When a country is a financial wreck hosting the games is just idiotic.

Ah well, nothing we can do about it now:rolleyes:

Wow! Let the marketing begin!

I mean games. Totally meant games.

Lol! :D

Spot on!

I also agree 100%. What a waste of money all this is. But yea like you said - thats your tax £ and my £ being thrown into silly stadiums :(

But we weren't in a financial wreck in 2005 when we were awarded the games, and there wasn't much we could do after that...

I kinda agree, but I feel, sometimes, your leaders have to draw a line in the sand (which they should have done in 07) and say "Sorry but we just can't afford it". If I go into a showroom tomorrow and buy a nice shiny new car, and then 6 months later I get fired - that car would have to be repo'd. Sticking with something you can't really afford is the source of a lot of problems in the country - and if want to correct it, then the governments of this world have to act the right way - like they expect their citizens to do. Just my opinion :)

So which country is an a financial position to hold it (bearing in mind China can't really hold it two times in a row), or should we postpone all sporting events until the global economic problem has gone away?

Also, lest we forget that the Olympics will also bringing in a hell of a lot of money to the country. Whether it outweighs the cost I don't know but you can't just look at the outlay by itself.

I guess that there are plenty of economies which have positive GDP growth that could hold it (I thinking of the states like Brazil, though economists group several high performing economies like Brazil together - though I forget the term they use). On the later if I had a choice of postponing vs significantly damaging the host's economy - well I feel there's only one choice on that. Peoples daily lives come before any sport, or other unnecessary expense.

In terms of economic benefits - I'm not sure it's the golden egg it appears to be. My own opinion is that, whilst there will be a temporary boost to tourism, it will in no way match the huge expense the UK will incur (for example I wouldn't be surprised if the recent military exercises stretched into the millions).
