West Point, 1830. A world-weary detective is hired to discreetly investigate the gruesome murder of a cadet. Stymied by the cadets’ code of silence, he enlists one of their own to help unravel the case — a young man the world would come to know as Edgar Allan Poe.

Not quite sure why but reminds me in a way of The Fountain (2006). Not sure if it is a movie I'd enjoy or not.

Sign me up, looks like it could be a good movie. The cinematography looks outstanding and anything Bale is in he usually knocks it out of the park. Looking forward to it.

Method actors like Bale yep, definitely immense screen presence!

This sort of American gothic genre is right up my street too,, especially the way the camera and sound directing are often done.

Watched about 1/3rd of it so far - slick but ponderous, not really holding my attention but I'm tired from work and not really in the mindset for this kind of movie.

It was ok, I didn't fall asleep, nor was I particularly gripped or engrossed.

Most surprising part was most of the cast were British, playing American's.

6/10

Will give this a go later, like Scott Cooper films a lot , but they can be pretty bleak, Hostiles particularly so, presume this is more of the same ?

Watches a few nights ago, enjoyed it a fair bit. Well acted and looked gorgeous, the twists were telegraphed a mile off and Gillian Anderson was the weakest thing in it though.

Wouldn't have said bleak, but definitely not full of the joys of spring.

Hostiles and Out of the Furnace are better films in my opinion.
Finally watched it, its a bit slow but its ok, cant say these sort of gothic period pieces are my cup of tea.

Still sticking with Out of the Furnace for his best film so far.

Well I for one did not see the twist coming.

Enjoyable film with some good character actors.

I know Bale supposedly goes in for the whole "method" approach to his acting but cant help feeling he acts pretty much the same in every film.
