I wonder if a nicely OC'd custom 1070 will be enough for 21:9 UW (1440)? That's going to be the killer question for me, and what currently has me on the fence between the 1070/1080... in absence of price and performance of the custom 1070's, I just don't know which way I'm going to go yet.

I think a 3570k @ 4.0 would be fine tbh, If you can, let me know as i have the same cpu and i am thinking what would be overkill for this cpu, 1070, 1080 or 1080ti.
None of those are overkill. The large majority of games are GPU-limited and 3570k at 4Ghz+ is still an entirely capable CPU.

And CPU's, in 99% of cases, have nothing to do with resolution. That's ALL GPU-based. The only exception is the rare occasion where the level of detail at different draw distances is affected by your chosen resolution(like with MGS V).

So if your CPU doesn't bottleneck you at 1080p, it wont bottleneck you at 1440p or even 8k, either.

Good to know, I noticed in the Division that my 780 was 99% utilisation and my 3570k @ stock 3.8 was on 61% utilisation. Makes me think that at least i have room for a 1070, 1080 or 1080ti, justification is my only advocate atm.

They have said they are not going to sell them and best to buy elsewhere. A mistake I think.

I agree, but there may be light at the end of the tunnel..

From what I've been told, we're waiting on availability from manufacturers guys. We hope to stock them as soon as we are able to, but I don't have any idea on pricing or an ETA.

Still they'll be at least £30 a piece I expect which does dampen the value proposition of SLI a little.

+1 cannot agree with this more, this is exactly how it seems, making their 1080 redundant almost immediately by bringing out the 1070. I expect the 1070 to sell in droves like the 970 did.

I disagree. I went with 970 last time but I think I'm going with the 1080 this time. The 1070 isn't the clear choice like the 970 was - nvidia have gimped it enough that there is clear water in benchmarks between the two. Benchmarks look good at 1440p but I don't know if I'd be comfortable buying a card that just about hits 60 at 1440p now - what'll it be like in a years time? Also I have a 3440x1440 monitor so those 1440p framerates will take a nosedive.

Yes,my ours paying 50% more for 25% more power so they are clearly creaming extra off the top. But the 1080 still has its place. When the 1080ti comes out next year I hope/expect the 1080 to drop in price to be more in line with the 1070 power:price ratio

FE is confirmed as £399. No confirmation of custom prices but going by the 1080 launch they should start at £320.

More like £349 for the cheap ones, edging up to £399 for the good ones (overclocked, custom coolers)

Range in the US is $379-449 so about £50

I'd hate to have just pre-ordered a GTX 1070, the RX 480 is almost half the price and I'd say no less than 80% the performance.

Well how far back do you go in pursuit of good value? Most people have a performance target they want to hit. If you're coming from a 970, is the 480 really that interesting?
