The Pascal GTX 1070 Owners Thread

Not going to argue what overkill means to each person but for me if you're only occasionally dropping below 60fps in the odd game or two with unnecessarily taxing settings (ultra grass on GTA V for example), then the card is plenty powerful enough :)

Everyone has different goals though!

I suppose it depends how you interpret max settings. I'd say you can get 1440p 60fps at max in almost any game if you stick to no higher than 2x MSAA. Some well-optimised or older games like Dirt Rally will quite happily run maxed at 60fps with 4x or even 8x MSAA. At 1440p jaggies don't seem to be as much of a problem anyway.

In a few games you might have to tone down one or two settings - e.g. GTA V I put grass down from ultra to very high (barely perceptible difference in terms of quality) and had to choose between softest shadows with hi res shadows on or PCSS with hi res shadows off (I chose the latter, looks better to me). Ultimately I'm not bothered about this as the game still looks fantastic and maintains 60fps without much issue. For my personal needs dropping an extra £200 on a 1080 is not worth it just for the sake of one or two higher settings at 1440p.

I've got the MSI and it's great, even though I'm still miffed it went down in price almost immediately after I bought one:p

I bet most of them are very good. The MSI is cool and inaudible under load. I've also heard good things about EVGA and Palit.

If you play games at 1080p and even 1440p but don't mind turning a few settings down.

As someone with the card and 1440p the 1070 is plenty for this res :) definitely overkill for 1080p

From the reviews I saw it was above the 980 Ti in nearly every test with Ultra and if the 980 Ti was ahead on some others, it was 1 - 2 fps. It was well ahead on Doom if I remember correctly.

Whats the best 1070 to get if I want:

1. fans stop if low temps
2. Great cooling
3. Good Ocer and good brand

which to go with? read decent reviews about the GeForce GTX 1070 GAMING X 8G
any other contenders? or ASUS ROG GeForce GTX 1070 STRIX? or ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1070 AMP!?

thanks

I wouldn't get an Asus, way overpriced. The Zotacs seem very good.

Personally I am running a Palit GameRock at 2088/9000, fans don't start until it hits 55c and it generally runs at 68c/40% fans in game which is very quiet.

Guys Zotac AMP Extreme or MSI Gaming X? I'm swaying to the MSI as I have a red and black build.
I'd go for the MSI, personally. I just don't see a reason for a massive 2.5 slot card like the AMP Extreme really. These chips don't put out anywhere near enough heat to require such a gigantic cooler. The two slot ones handle it just fine, keeping temperatures around 70 with extremely low fan RPMs.

The EVGA FTW is also worth considering, as it has very similar performance to the MSI across the board and is around the same price now.

O.o Strange point of view.

Personally I don't see why someone should spend more for MSI or EVGA when Palit, Inno3D and Zotac offer the same (and often better) performance for less money.

From the Palit Jetstream at 389£ to the Gaming X and FTW at 469£ you're paying 80£ for the brand.

there is a point for 2.5 slot cards,. imo 70C is too high, I have never liked my gpus running at those temps, my palit with fans that cannot be heard over case fans and keeping temps at 60C is brilliant. No longer will I be fooled by the evga/asus tax.
