In my experience radeoncards had the worst coil whine ever all nvidia cards I had were mostly reference and never had whine

The 1080 g1 is the first 3rd party card I had from nvidia and only has whine on 2 games (doom and witcher 3 ) and only in the menus when launching

Thanks, I've been recommend a EVGA card oddly, so ill look at one of them or a Titan X(P) even though I only play @ 3440 x 1440P so it maybe a waste.

I'll put my 980 back in for the time being.

All i can add to the argument is that I have an EVGA FE from day one and i can say it clocks as high as any custom and beats nearly all of them in the tests on OcUK.

That's good to know, I was looking at the Classifed card but EK have canceled there W/B's for the card.

No coil whine then on the FE card?

My EVGA 1080 FTW too at least it seems to have quietened down now.

My experience is exactly the opposite after about 10 years of ATI/AMD cards its a bit of let down as I never had any trouble with any of those... and I remember all the GTX 970 coil whine reports here.

Witcher 3 seems to be a repeat offender its well known for it from what I hear (its the one that causes/caused my 1080 to howl like a banshee) my other PC with the RX 480 in it is fine. Someone else with a 480 reported whine with TW3 though.

Same with my Gigabyte FE. Can push it to 2.1 and apart from the fan, it's dead quiet, lightening fast with no issues.

Sounds like another lottery thing.

Anyone running a single 1080 for 4k?

How's your experience of it?

Does it do the trick for most settings maxed with no AA on?

I ask as I'm running 2 290xs in a fairly small room with no window and no ventilation, and it gets quite toasty in here. I find my performance with these cards is excellent, but I am using a Freesync monitor.

Bit borderline for 4K. Short answer is no but if you can live with a few key settings at sensible levels it will be fine.

I am at 3440x1440 and it won't maintain 60fps in eg tomb raider when absolutely maxed and 4K is a lot more.

I run a 1080 at 4K And have no issues .. at 4K you dont need some of the AA settings
Runs the witcher 3 lovely
Dues ex md is optimised Bad so need to dial down

Overall I wouldn't shift back to 1440p and I don't feel the need for a 2nd card

I have two 1080 fe's in sli which are wc'd. I don't get to play much (wife, 1yo kid, demanding job) so I limit myself to a few games namely Rainbow Six Siege, Battlefront, BF4, Doom and Star Citizen (which is in Alpha still). Rss now scales very well with sli as do the dice games. They amazing in fact.

Doom doesn't like it at all and neither does SC however, both work just fine with a single gpu which still maxes out my X34's refresh rate at max settings with zero issue.

I went sli as RSS would only reach mid 70's fps at recommended settings on the x34 and the frostbite games were in the 80's. Now I can reach 95 fps at max settings and even bump up the resolution scaling A LOT for an even sharper image.

It took some fiddling to get it working smoothly but now I just turn SLI on or off dependent on game and that's as much thought as I give it. I use the HB bridge too which does have an effect when say playing bf4 at 3440x1440 at ultra and with 150% resolution scaling. I've only detected stutter during the slow sweeping camera panning in Heaven but not in any game so far.

I'd say go fot it. I'd also say go for 2x ti's if you could afford what ever silly price Nvidia give them. You'll be super future proof then.
