The perfect console, Xbox 360 or PS3? (No fighting :p)

I don't think they'll decrease too much. I don't think either console has a great lifespan left (2 years or so I reckon - so enough for you to get moneys worth).

bang for buck, it's the xbox. It's cheap and although you have to pay for Live, Xbox Live is the better online experience.

it boils down to you and your personal preference.

What console do your mates have? As when the next big game hits you'll be wanting to play with them.

At the minute I prefer the PS3 but that's because I've only ever owned a Playstation, I like aspects of both consoles and they both perform relatively the same now.

From what I know the majority of my friends own 360's

I do prefer the 360, for gamepad and xbox live reasons.

Most of my mates have one as opposed to a PS3, which is a factor (different for everyone I guess)

The older the platforms get, the more I like the fact the PS3 has Blu-Ray though. Lets see what the next-gen brings...

I'd then suggest getting an xbox. Only due to that fact.

Games aren't cross platform, so if the new COD or battlefield comes out next week and you want to play with them in the same squad - which lets face it, is half the fun... You won't be able too.

i always find that you can only play so much against randomers before it becomes boring, but if you play with / against friends then the longetivity lasts.

I had a PS3 along side the 360 at one point and I only used it for a few exclusives and blu rays, sold it and replaced with originally sold blu ray playing.

The reasons for not liking the PS3... The biggest for me was the controller, it felt... Cheap, too small and flimsy :(

Also, the load times were silly some times and the updates were painful.

So for me, 360 :)

Don't get me wrong I love my PS3 as I've got plenty of games for it, Blu-Ray etc. But I think as everyone no longer has a PS3 (hardly any of my friends) It's probably better to make the move

If this doesn't turn into a 'fan boy' thread, I'll eat my face :D

I'm lucky enough to own both, and have done for many years - a friend actually convinced me to try the 360, whilst I was a die hard PC gamer... never looked back :)

Anyway the perfect console (for me) would be this:

PS3 hardware generally - as in the lack of noise (my 360/all I've tried are too noisy), small footprint (no power brick), integrated components (no need to buy a wifi adapter), but I'd happily choose whichever has the better graphics and speed... though it's hard to choose this as there's such a minuscule difference in most games; depending on how sloppy the developer it is really. Though, I must say, having recently purchased Skyrim for my 360 as well, it seems to run/load much quicker than my PS3 - saves in about 1/3 of the time too!

360 software - the dashboard now looks mature, and not the childish blade system of old, it also updates quicker than my PS3 (smaller system updates I guess) and it generally looks nice and has all the features most of us need in easy to navigate menus. That's not to say I dislike XMB mind you, I have always liked its simplicity - though, there are far too many system settings; but I guess this harks to the fact the PS3 is considered more of a media server than the 360 (going by previous posts).

Love it or loathe it too, Xbox Live walks all over PSN, and this is coming from someone who loves a moan about paying for Live - but this side of PS3 just lets the whole console down imo. As a lazy couch sitting gamer, I lament some of the simplest things being so difficult/absent on the PS3 - party chat for example..... where is God's name is that feature!?! The guide button features of the Xbox are also so simple - message flashes up, you press guide and immediately get taken to the message - message flashes up on PS3, press Home, wait, scroll to the menu, select friend, select messages.... etc etc.

As I cannot have a single console above, I would have to keep my PS3 - as I have over 100 Blue Rays.

Edit: Oh, I completely forgot the who debate about the controllers! Frankly, they both work really well for me - but the sticks of the PS3 have always (and still do) feel more fluid for FPS. So.... Xbox controller, but with PS3 sticks :D

I would say wait and see what happens, neither console is perfect hence why most people have both.

Also consider that the WiiU hopefully arrives this year, and going by Nintendo's current form I wouldn't be surprised if they actually offer something that everyone is happy with...

Thanks for the reply Scort :)

I've noticed that PS3 updates take a long time, It doesn't help with having slow internet but they always seem to be big updates either for games or the system.

The Xbox dashboard seems okay and easy to use from what I've seen of it, but the only aspect I dislike about the Xbox is that it can be quite noisy when loading games compared with the PS3 but that seems like my only downside to it.

Agree with most of that, just a couple of comments:

- You need to try the newer "slim" X360 - sooo much quieter than the old version and in general operation, I would put it practically on-par with the PS3 even! However, the disc drive definitely is louder. This wouldn't be a deal breaker for me though as I live in a well-built detached house with a gf who doesn't mind me making noise, so i always have my HT system cranked up :) I reckon I would still notice the difference in noise in loading/end of game/pause scenarios etc...

- I'm still not a fan of the Xbox dashboard, it works ok (this is separate from the notifications, chat and in-game menus etc which work much better on X360). I just much prefer the general look and feel of the PS3 interface - the wavy, sparkly lines are rather pretty :)

- Good point about the sticks, I keep harping over the location of them, but in use they're pretty damn good. Xbox 360 controller with PS3 sticks in the same location as the X360 sticks would be brilliant...

As a games console for me personally I prefer the 360. Prefer the controller (why have Sony barely updated their controller after over 15 years?!!), the online experience is far superior and the exclusives tend to be more up my alley, although over the past year or so they've dropped off a bit.

The PS3 however is an excellent media player, for streaming stuff off my PC it's far less hassle than the 360, I also prefer never having to use multiple discs for gaming. The dashboard does let it down a bit though, I've always felt it's not very well organised or nice to look at.

Overall for me - 360.
