****The Playstation 3 Slim Thread****

It looks butt ugly, going to stick with my 60gb launch, it's a new refurb launch purchased from MM so no wear and tear and full back compatibility (great considering I want to play the PS2 MGS and FF games). The fan noise is my only quibble, just going to check if Sony will do anything about it and if not, I will apply new thermal paste and give it a go myself. Perhaps if I botch it up completely and break it I'll justify getting a slim, but the 'fat' looks so much better.

Fans shouldn't be making any noise unless it starts to overheat.

Also, once your launch 60gb dies, you won't be able to get it exchanged for another 60gb from sony. Not sure if they even touch 60gb bc models anymore either. Thats why I sold my 60gb for an 80gb.

The more pics of the slim I see the more vile it looks.

The plastic looks so cheap, it actually looks like something you'd expect from a knock off.

With a baseline of 49 decibels, the Slim averaged 53 to 56 db when in use / playing a game / installing data (in this case, Metal Gear Solid 4), compared to the 55 to 58 db of the original. Blu-ray movie playback is where it becomes noticeable, as the slim peaked for us at 60 db when the original was doing 70 db running the same disc.
So according to that playing a Blu-Ray produces more noise than playing a game

On my PS3 playing a game it switches to fan setting 3 most of the time but playing a Blu-Ray it stays at setting 2

Am I the only one that doesn't like the look of the new PS3 from the shots and videos?

It looks a little cheap and tacky.

Liking the look of the slim vs the phat.

Tempted to get one of these in the future after the intial furore dies down and the price gets discounted, with a couple of games thrown in.

Meh, I like it. Same finish as the PS2 slim had.

That looks like arse too... it looked good when it came out. The PS3 was all about being bigger, better, more expensive (etc) than the other "next gen" consoles... design wise it looks a good 10 years old.

Totally agree with the the "if they're gonna make it smaller, why didn't they change the width?" mentality.

If I'm spending close to £300 or so on a console, I want it to look sleek and impressive, I want it to sit next to my Amp, next to my HTPC and not look out of place.

The PS3 slim looks like a PS2... and a PS2 doesn't fit with any current AV equipment... it looks cheap, tacky and 10+ years out of date.

I'm pleased the price is going down, don't get me wrong (I may pick up a second in the future if all goes well) but the PS3 Slim won't be going in my living room... it'll go in the bedroom under a box in a cupboard so nobody sees it's hideous form and turns to stone.

I think it looks ok really. It could have been better. Even filling the PS3 logo in with silver and making the disc-drive bezel silver would have been an improvement, it needs something to contrast the matte finish. I don't think the official Sony photos look very good. The other photos starting to appear look better.

I can't see cheap fat PS3s happening really, maybe for a lucky few. It seems some places have dropped the price to £250 but I don't think there will be many left when the slim hits the shelves. Even then someone will pay £250 for a fat version with 2 games over a slim with none so they will soon sell out. And if shops do get stuck with them, all they will do is bundle them with 5 unsellable games for £250, the kind of games you see stacked up in 2nd hand games shops for £3 each

If the old retail price of the PS3 was £299 and most shops sold it for ~£280 with 1 or 2 games then I can't see why they can't do a PS3 slim + GT5 bundle for christmas for £249. I think that would be a big seller.

Yeah, I agree. It looks very cheap and tacky. I was looking to get a PS3 to compliment my 360. If I do it will probably be one of the old ones rather than the slim. Still, the price cut is good.

Didn't the Playstation 2 and the PS2 sell alongside eachother for a year or so before they phased out the original?

Why would you get an old one when there is a slim? Its a much more refined system... Looks mean nothing when your eyes will be on the screen and not the console.

Is there more information other than just impressions of the design? Like, do we know how loud and hot it gets? Otherwise, we don't really know if it is a more "refined" system.

Previous page shows quieter and the fact it uses just under 1/2 of the power of the original PS3 i'd say cooler is a given. It's around 10db quieter than the original PS3 when playing blurays and 2-3db quieter when gaming.
