As far as I am aware, no. They can hire people who have a criminal record, depending on the age of the offence (I think it must be 10/15 years from the last offence) and depending on the nature of the offence (it must not have an element of dishonesty).
 
ok, i had heard that they recently changed the law to allow people with criminal records to join the police. but i was unsure if that was for all crimes or just allowing people who have say not paid a fine for example.

but thanks for clearing that up.

Do they not need to sort out like insurnace and loads of paper work to be able to let you come along?

I would assume they would make you sign a disclaimer which would exclude them of all liability if something were to happen.

Yea am sorry i didnt post it here sooner i simply didnt think to, there were about 20 people in the room, 3 of which ahd applied to the force before but where ussuccesful and one which was waiting for a start date but had been adviced to join the specials in the eman time.

The procces is very lenghty, 6 weeks for the paper sift, another 6 for vetting, 14 weeks for the training add on a bit more time for all the other bits and peices
 
I applied at the very end of March 09. I will become an attested constable mid July 2010. It's not a quick processes, so be patient.

Haha, I still am, though I have taken this time to reflect on other issues in my life, and will probably now finish my degree before applying again. Don't know why, but I don't think it would look good in an interview if I had just upped and left university.
 
Really interested in applying to the police force after my BT apprenticeship ends.
Do you think it would be appropriate to apply in my last year of the apprenticeship with a view to joining soon after it ends, or wait till my apprenticeship ends and apply?
 
I'm expecting a letter any day now with an update on Met start dates. I completed my Day 2 in November but not heard much since, other than "you won't be starting for ages LOL" type letters. (Obviously they didn't actually say that)
 
Been doing a lot of reading regarding applying for either Lothian And Borders Police, or Strathclyde Police. Despite not particularly enjoying my apprenticeship, I do only have just over a year to go and I am on fairly good money. I think it would be foolish to give up at this point to go into the police.
