The pope can "popeoff" for all i care, his popemobile is kinda wacky looking though so that gives him a little bit of "cool", whenever i see it I immediately want to fill it with water and stick some fish in.

I wouldn't mind going to see him when he's in Glasgow just because it's a rare event and might make for an interesting day out, though I refuse to pay so much (a voluntary donation would be a better idea).
It is also going to cause chaos in Glasgow, they are shutting parts of the motorway down and what not.
I don't have any issue with him coming over, whilst it's a bit rubbish that we have to pay so much (the Vatican are making a sizeable donation), we do the same for all other state leaders.
I do find it amusing that he's doing his mass in Bellahouston park, right beside Ibrox though.

Yeah come to think of it there are bound to be ambulances on A&E calls delivering patients to hospitals and if there is heavy traffic jam due to this guy visit then I can only imagine what will happen to those poor patients

I come from south asia and there have been many cases where there was heavy traffic due to president, vip visit etc and ambulances got stuck in the traffic so couldn't deliver patients fast enough to hospitals and they died on the way.

I was the same as the OP, figured I could make a day out of it and have a few beers and a laugh, but then realised that I had to pay and scrubbed the idea. I'm not religious but wanted to know what all the fuss was about.

The Popemobile will be used. The Vatican have brought over two Popemobile vehicles to the UK.

It's a state visit isn't it? So it would be normal for the UK to pick up some of the security costs.
It's UN recognition is pretty unimportant, what matters is if we recognise it, which as we have an ambassador to the Vatican I would assume we do. As such if it is a state visit then it is only normal for us to pick up security costs.
That is aside from the fact that there are several million catholics in the UK too who also pay taxes.
You are wrong. It's not a member of the UN, but is recognized as a sovereign state. They are welcomed to send observers to most working areas of the UN but don't participate. If they wish, they can request full membership. Switzerland did this in the early 2000s, though I forget what year.
It is a state visit, the first of its kind and as such it's only right that we pick up the budget. Though it must be stated that the Vatican are making a sizeable donation. When John Paul came over, that was a Papal visit.
