Really love the processing on the shots you take 42zx!
Guessing you process them from RAW? Any special tricks other than just spending a lot of time doing it?

Yeah, shot RAW when I had a Canon 50D. It was a while ago now and went through several iterations, learned a lot about editing portraits while doing it.

The main things I remember were I had the exposure all the way down because the original was overexposed quite a lot but details like his freckles showed up when underexposed in LR3, then just blacks, contrasts and curves to make it pop a bit and I lightened his eyes somewhat. It actually got quite far in a decent competition which I was shocked about but lost to a much better shot of some crashing waves.

This is the colour version but I felt the B&W stood out more.

Adbp1, Ive never tried droplet shots but then I don't have a flashgun atm, I imagine you could spend hours trying to get a good one. Are you using back cards and food colouring ?

Taken with my point and shoot (which cost less than 30quid), I thought it was cute so I'm posting it here :) It was taken to prove a point to my Sister that she didn't need to buy a new camera to take close ups:

Hiya, first off i like the shot you posted prefer b+w
i tried several weeks ago with droplets using no flash, just 2 desklamps at 50w each but this still wasnt enough.
bought the yongnuo 565ex and 2 rf603 triggers from ebay (uk seller arrived within 4 days!!)
and those were the results i got. probably took around 50-100 shots to get dozen decent ones.
food coloring for the drop and colored card behind.

Thanks, maybe I'll try it when I get round to buying a flash. I think there are a lot of shots you have to get out your system, stuff you see in magazines etc :)

With regards to my portrait, I guess its a marmite thing, with the original photo be really rather overexposed getting the exposure back down to something usable in LR3 gave it this gritty look no matter what. Each to their own though eh :)

Hey guys.

My 600D arrived so I have been messing about with it a bit. To be honest, I have no idea what I'm doing.

Anyway, I'm just as interested in the editing of photos as the actual taking. I've been messing about with one I took of my kid. Now, I followed a guide on editing portrait shots. But to be honest, I'm not sure it actually looks better. The guide mainly said things like "change the brightness until it looks good" I have no idea what looks good!

I've posted them both below, the original and the edited version, could you give me some tips what to change on the edited version or suggest some things I can try on the non edited version.

I'm not so worried at this point about the composition of the photo but again, advice would appreciated. Also, if anyone could recommend a guide, that would be great.

Thank you :)
