the public sector

i have never worked in the public sector but was reading this ( i know it's old )

does anyone here work in the public sector? could you tell me how it differs from other work sectors when it comes to job security and people maybe taking advantage of sick days or hours worked etc?

I've worked for both, personally I prefer the private sector. It's more cut-throat and keeps you on your toes. I feel sorry for all the people who have lost their jobs during this recession, in both sectors, it cannot be easy.

Prior to the recession, when I was working in the public sector, and transitioned into the private sector, I can only say the public sector doesn't know how good it had it. Now I'm not so sure but the redundancy packages are sweeter in the public sector if the telegraph and FT are to be believed.
