The quality of officiating

Im not making this thread because of last night! Disclaimer out of the way.

It was something we discussed at Uni this morning (me, Chelsea fan *2, Villa fan and a Forest fan)

Why exactly is it that the more 'professional' they try to make the officials in this country, with bigger wages, better training and whatever, the quality seems to be going in the other direction ?

Going back to 2006, there was maybe one bad decision every weekend, sometimes two, and this had fans raging.
(by bad, i mean a real talking point)

Yet this year we are already seeing one bad decision in pretty much every single game, and multiple ones in a few games.

So why exactly is this happening? and why are the FA sticking their heads in the sand "tralala there is no problem with the quality of our officiating" instead of doing something about it like South America had to admit and do in the 90's -> 00's .

The standard of officiating has been terrible this season. I'm struggling to think of Liverpool game this season that hasn't had at least 1 major mistake from either the ref or linesman (not necessarily against Liverpool before anybody starts); in several cases there's been 3 or 4 major mistakes.

Even in some instances where the correct decision has been reached, the process of getting to that decision is questionable to say the least.

I agree with Shamikebab. Refereeing has never been so good.

Back in 2006, most people weren't using Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc. It was much harder to analyse and discuss refereeing.

I'm not saying that refereeing couldn't be improved but it's certainly no worse than 5 years ago.

I don't think it's getting any worse, it's just getting discussed more by the media and fans.

He's right y'know

imo it hasn't been too bad this year, occasional bad calls (you don't expect perfection) but I seem to remember last season or the season before it was horrendous every week for about 2 months.

Thats only an issue if your influenced by outsiders surely?

It just seems like more and more when we sit down on a sunday evening or at Uni that we end up talking about a mountain of decisions the officials screwed up.

We watch a lot of football and only really go in-depth on neutral games so as not to get into any drunken incidents we might later regret =p so its not like personal reasons are clouding our judgement either.

The fact they can't be criticised by players/managers without fear of punishment is ridiculous.

Video replays and appeals are needed, couldn't give a **** about the pace of the game ****, want proper results.

Let's a manager throw a flag on the pitch, play continues until ball is dead and then video review can begin.

Jesus, they would get torn apart with the **** ups they make constantly, i would love it.

Well yes and no, it could potentially do themselves a favour by saying "I got that wrong" in the public domain, I've no doubt that they say these things to players / managers after the game that approach them.

I'd hope that being put in to the public domain, even if it was just a set of 3 questions after the game that were almost a standard set that the referee would answer to the churnalists, would make them evaluate and assess themselves even more.

How about the quality of players? Bunch of racist, petulant little scumbags. John 'Black ****' Terry, Luis Suarez with his middle finger and of course, all those other players diving and simulating all the time.

The officials should be armed with knives and clubs, ready to strike down these sad excuses of human beings.

If that's the case, then am sure the officials would need mini-guns for the crowd as well, especially when there giving the players, managers and ref's constant abuse

The FA don't want to introduce cameras to help the refs. Why? So everyone can get animated about all the bad decisions the referees make, as well as the actual football. It's theatre. A bit like wrestling. It could all be sorted out in a couple of weeks if anyone at the top of football had a will to do it.
