It's easy to hide your agenda if you hide it behind something and not make it so obvious.

Maybe keep a record of the type of post made by certain members and see how they only ever really respond to or start threads with an agenda against others.

It's a discussion forum and discussion should be encouraged. It will help open more eyes.

The last thing I need is someone saying I'm just making stuff up with no proof. Should I be uploading my whole life to twitch to satisfy them that these things have occurred?

I was born in this country and lived here since. I'm not Muslim, I'm not vegetarian, I drink alcohol. Do you know how many times I have had people assume I only eat halal and I don't drink, etc. It happened only last week.

I had to tell them I'm not Muslim and I can eat anything. Even when I was in Milan I walked into a shop and the white Italian said hello to me in Arabic. I said to him I'm not Muslim and he said well you look Muslim.

He didn't mean any offence I understand that. But it does get extremely tiring. I don't think he was a racist he was just trying to be friendly. But when you are subject to stuff like this your whole life in varying degrees it's much easier to spot someone who is a friendly and others who see you as a threat.

Im not sure if Im just broken (woke) or Ive just seen a lot of racism directed towards a lot of my mates growing up so am able to spot it easier.

This is a perfect example, I've just had a quick cursory glance at the users posts in question for August and can't see anything 'vile'. People are just far too quick to throw around terms that should mean something, instead they are watering down what is truly 'racist', 'phobic' or 'vile'.

And it's easier to confuse the two. I have a long black beard but I'm white and can pass for Middle Eastern [many people have said so]. People who don't know me often talk to me in Arabic. I take no offence at it whatsoever.

I questioned that in my previous reply though. It can't be that easily hidden with how often racist or something alluding to that gets flung at people on here.

I shouldn't need to keep a track on anything as I trust the moderators are taking a sensible approach to genuine cases of racism. I'm not going to accuse them of ignoring it or not understanding it as you have done.

Not the same thing at all. You grew up white. You weren't subject to proper racism throughout school, your whole life, etc

Was your family members face slashed?

Have you had someone throw rubbish on your property every night for years? Also happened to the other Asian family on the same road but nobody else funny that.

Just because someone mistook you for being Arabic a couple of times doesn't even pale in comparison to the many many instances of true racism over the years.

I think this thread might be a perfect example of how you can talk about racism without it going that far down hill because this is a discussion on/of racism and not about a 'race'.

I dont know how long that will last though sadly.
 
I recall it being pretty bad around ~15 years at the peak of anti-Muslim hysteria, but recently these topics have become so boring it’s putting me off the forum and I’ve been spending time elsewhere.

It’s more exhausting than ever before, particularly as the issues are being rammed at you from all directions online and offline. I’m not disputing the relevance of it, but there is only so much an individual can be exposed to something before fatigue sets in.

As I said elsewhere, the Captain Tom guy who raised millions and millions? Brilliant person... but I got sick of hearing about even him.

The mods aren't magicians they require everyone on here to do their part and that means you have to report posts.

How many posts have you reported?

I had a similar conversation with my wife. She's Indian/Sikh but born here, the same as you I guess. When George Floyd was murdered, I said to her, I'm glad that the problem here isn't so bad. Of course, our police don't go around murdering people, but she said that I just don't see it. She's experienced all sorts of prejudice throughout her life. Now, she has been known to over react, so I took it with a piece of salt, but she has experienced racist ******** just like you.

Unfortunately, I've seen more obvious racism from other Indians than I have from other white people. I can remember one incident where this skin head made us both feel extremely uncomfortable. But she says it happens quite often...again, I just can't see it.

It's so complicated and difficult.

What's not complicated is that this forum has recently been filled with boring posts trying to diminish the severity of the issues that black people and other ethnic minorities face in the US, just because they don't face them here. I can see both sides of that being white and British, but who am I (or they) to say that the claims of these people isn't true.

As I said in the closed thread, it's got to the point now where it's ruining GD. If I wanted to join a forum of nationalistic right-wingers, I would have done.

I can't speak for them but I imagine a lot of posts get reported and I've seen many a thread with mass deletions.

You said it was rhetorical but I've reported quite a few posts over my time here. Not all for racism mind you.
 
Yeah it's worse and yeah it's very much connected to what happening across the planet right now.

It is a huge problem that yes people don't see it because they just don't know any better.

Unless you have actually lived in those shoes you will never really get it.

Yes Indians are racist too. You will find them in every country. It's why education is key and India has one of the worst education systems in the world and its going to take many years to overcome that barrier.

However people walking around completely oblivious to the real extent of the issue and saying its all being blown out of proportion have never had to walk in these shoes.

It's time people woke up and confronted others for their poor behaviour rather than either being asleep at the wheel and dare I say there are many on here that encourage it.
 
I think fatigue is definitely the right term for it. Constant bombardment from the media and activist types telling everyone just how awful they are makes your average Joe switch off. As soon as I see the R word being casually thrown around now without evidence I just sigh and roll my eyes. It's made this place a lot less enjoyable than it used to be a couple of years ago.

A decent number of my social circle drinking buddies are Sikh lads and maybe it's the area we're in but they've never indicated serious issues to any of the rest of us as far as the current day is concerned (yes the conversation has come up several times). It's night and day comparing my school days and 2020 but you're still going to get absolute knobbers unfortunately.
