My friend is looking at getting a Porsche 924 Carrera GT soon.

He has £4k to spend on one, and is currently looking at pistonheads at them.

The one that has attracted his attention is 1985 jobby, which seems mint condition and has apparentely had an engine overhaul before going into storage (Still waiting if there is documentation to prove this)

Anyway, the car has just had a new MOT, but what would it be like for everyday driving around? Service costs etc?

Also what engine came in these cars?

Thanks!

The 924 Carrera GT had a 210hp 4 cylinder, the later GTS had 245hp. Can't remember if it's 2.0l or 2.5l though.

There was a GT, GTS and GTR. The motors were: M31.50/ 210hp/ 8.5CR, M31.60/ 250hp/ 8.0CR, M31.70/ 375hp/ 7.1CR.

A mate and his dad brought one of these for a trackday car and it was pretty good even though the engine in theirs was a 130bhp audi one I think. You can transfer parts from the 944 over apparently

Please ask your mate to do some serious research, and investigate the possibility of buying from/via a good independent source - 911Virgin, Cridfords or so on- for the chance of a warranty - at the very least get it checked over by a Porsche specialist before parting with cash
It's a 21 year old performance car - make sure he has a pot of cash for the invariable breakages/problems, an account at German and Swedish, and another car for the days when its off the road.....

You just need to make sure you buy a decent one! If you don't then it will cost you a small fortune in repairs. Service history and recent bills is extremely important.

I own 944 S2 and use it everyday and love it to bits!

I agree with the advice that the 944 turbo 250bhp will be a much better idea than the 924, however a decent one will set you back more than £4k.

wasn't it a spiced up version of the VW LT van engine?

I don't think there was much left of it by the time they got to the 924 Carrera GT/GTS/GTR models though. Might well be the same casting for the block, but I doubt much else survived.

i think the basic design limited them but you're right in that even the first gen 924 had received more than a few different engine parts to the low compression LT van.
