The Register pwned...

It's Ascio that has been hacked (apparently). betfair.com has also had its nameservers changed along with acer.com and vodafone.com (and loads of others I expect!).

Code:
$ for i in betfair.com theregister.co.uk acer.com telegraph.co.uk vodafone.com ups.com; do echo $i; whois $i | egrep 'ns[12]'; done
betfair.com

  ns2.yumurtakabugu.com (NSYUMURT1119541)

Voda looks okay, not so the others.

@rupertg: DNS hack is redirecting El Reg, the D Tel, Betfair, UPS, Acer and other sites to Turkish hackers. Fix will take 3hrs to propagate.

Aren't The Register generally for freedom of information, etc? Why would hackers target them?

Aren't The Register generally for freedom of information, etc? Why would hackers target them?

Probably because they can.

A lot of hackers just do it for the sake of hacking. I imagine some want tighter controls on the internet/restricted freedoms.

It's not personal, so they've not been targeted specifically because of who they are what content they publish.
