Caught this on my Google Now feed by accident this morning and it sounded great. Will watch first ep this eve!

I think this is excellent. We're 2 episodes in. It's bleaker than bleak and he's a complete mess but you can also see why he does what he does. An actual proper "drama" for once.

This is far removed from the Office and Hobbit; exceptional from Martin Freeman (in my opinion and no, I'm not a scouser so have no opinion re accent).

Watched the first episode tonight, really enjoyed it. As mentioned it’s very grim, but it’s gritty and pulls no punches. Acting is superb and to my ears, Freeman’s nailed the scouse accent to a tee.

Looking forward to the rest of it.

Managed to watch the first episode last night and indeed it's very very good. Would never have guessed Martin Freeman to play such a role so well either.

seriously bleak. After watching the first episode I couldnt stomach a second one and had to put some light hearted comedy on.

I'm confused by the bleak comments. Maybe it's becasue I'm northern but there's quite a few light-hearted moments to snap you out of the hard reality he's facing.

Freeman was impressive. Seeing as he's also the executive producer he was clearly confident about the role. It's such a huge risk performing outside your normal remit with a strong challenging accent on top. Especially for a southerner. If he did this to set out to prove something he clearly achieved it. Liverpool is a far cry from Middle Earth, Minnesota, Staines, Slough and Baker St.

I did feel they could have done with one more episode, a bit more mop-up of some aspects of the story, but I love these smaller series that get to the point.

Always gets on my nerves when they don't use scousers to play scouse roles, but Martin Freeman's accent is one of the best I've heard

seems to have losts it's way a bit - the naive young person of colour cop is investigating him - she's a good actor

Binged it on Saturday, enjoyed it.
Not as dark as I was expecting from some of the earlier comments in this thread but still very well acted by Freeman. Also if I hadn't seen his face I would have sworn it was Stephen Graham talking.

Enjoying it, but didn't buy that a heroin addict street kid had the clear mindedness to swap cocaine for washing powder.

I haven't watched it - but some people like that seem to have natural instincts for sneaky/deceptive behaviour especially to try and get themselves out of trouble.

I've seen a few things with Freeman in, but this is the first one I recall him talking with a different accent, the first two episodes were more intresting than I expected this series to be.

Watched it, was good, very bleak and depressing as others have mentioned.. a man in turmoil between his mental state and trying to be a better person and living in a world which is all just detrimental to him.

I ended up finishing the series last night having spread it out over several days (too much to watch lately). Really good stuff, really dark and not really filled with many happy moments lol but that's life sometimes I guess.

Fans calling for Freeman to get a BAFTA, rightly so.
