Looking for this song, though specifically the version that I heard on TV last night, probably an advert (was on E4, i wasn't watching it though so it may have been credit music on a program)

Now, there are a lot of versions I can see but my musical knowledge isn't good enough for me to work out which version I heard.

It was an old sounding recording, so i'm guessing not Will Young/Gareth Gates version and was a bloke so I can rule out the female covers...

I know it's a long shot but does anyone have an idea which version it was?

Go go gadget wiki!

The earliest recording of the song was made by Neil Diamond, but as this recording was not released until after The Hollies' version (in 1969) it is often mistakenly listed as a cover version. In addition to the Hollies' recording, this song has been covered by Cher in the album Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves, The Osmonds in 1971, and again in 1975 by Olivia Newton-John. The Osmonds consider it a theme song, and regularly perform it in concert as a show closer.
In 1988 Bill Medley recorded "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" to be featured during the end credits for the film Rambo III, starring Sylvester Stallone. The song was produced by Giorgio Moroder and is available on one of the versions of the Rambo III soundtrack as well as the album The Best of Bill Medley.
Gotthard version of the song is included in 1996 BMG Ariola version of their third album "G."
"He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" was covered by singer Rufus Wainwright for the soundtrack to the Ben Stiller film "Zoolander".
