Its much hotter (so could be louder), and all that heat generated inside the case, a custom 1080 would be faster than the air cooled 64 too.

Vega doesnt need to be hotter and use more power, spend some time fiddling and you can have a faster cooler card.
All this stuff about how they are furnaces and use gigawatts of power are totally overblown rubbish by folk who aint got a clue - i would get a 56 or 64 air over any 1070 or 1080 unless i really needed the nvidia stuff like gsync.

No you shouldn't but this is an enthusiasts forum and we like doing these things.
Vega was pushed just a tiny bit too far by AMD, they didnt need to - If they had binned better and just polished the last 1% i think vega would have been better received. 56 is a far better card than the 1070s it competes with and the 64 whilst not being as good as the 56 is also solid compared to the 1080 which it competes with fine.
64 water is crap though... that should never have appeared.
You could say that you shouldnt have to delid an 8700k and fit it with a huge water cooler to make it fly but you do....
I now have a 1080ti but would have got another 56 if the prices were right, of course they aint... for amd or nvidia cards... i hope this doesnt carry on much longer.

Just get and overclock the 1080 then.
The LC 64 is much better than the air in my opinion, why i went for one, ive not even touched it, as fine as is, hitting over 1700, is quiet, and doesn't go over 70 degrees.

Bir boring aint it? You dont get freesync either, plus AMDs drivers and interface are better and i say that looking at the Nvidia panel on my screen right now 
Vega is actually quite interesting to overclock, like ryzen there are opportunities for some fun. Lowering vcore allowing higher boosts and fun with the hbm speeds thrown in.
My 56 with 64bios was putting out framerates in the same ballpark as a tweaked 1080... ok you cant actually buy a 56 now for proper money but when i got mine for 370 it was a bargain for the grunt.
Its different, its something new and like ryzen its not without flaws but its also interesting and you can make it play with the big boys.. to some extent.
If 56 comes back below 400 notes then imho its the card to get between the 580/1060 stuff and the 1080ti unless you need nvidias tech.

As i said i aint a fan of the liquid cooled model.
Ok it can put some frames out and its bios is handy for ... er stuff
but it do think its release alongside the other two vegas was a mistake.
When released vega looked a bit iffy, its drivers were only 95% of the way there, needing a release or two before they were solid - folk looked at the power usage and confusion over turbo modes and must have thought that vega was the second coming of fermi - a conclusion you could expect when the liquid card liked to sup watts more than a glasgow alchi likes bucky.
56 and 64 air are far better cards imho, better balanced and much better price / performance. Ok they might not hit the big 1700+ clocks the LC does but they do a pretty good job.

Have the LTD 64 Presume they are the same clocks like the standard 64 .

It uses more power and generates more heat as a result, but as to actually being hotter that depends on the cooling. I.E I had my reference V64 and GTX1080 in side by side machines at one point and something that shocked me as I wasn't expecting it was that the Vega ran cooler and quieter when doing/playing the same thing. Obviously it was putting out more heat but the better reference cooler meant it was exhausting it better so the additional TDP didn't cause it to run hotter, and it ran quieter (technically less loud, we are talking reference coolers here).
