the safest firewall in the world

So it seems comodo firewall is the safest firewall in the universe, i'm trying to get arma 2/minecraft servers working, just for casual gaming with mates, but this thing is driving me up the wall, regardless of how i set exclusions (global, application specific, port range or single port) the only way it seems i can get folk past this firewall is by turning it off completely (which with open ports, i'm obviously hesitant to do).

Anyone lend a brother a hand as to how i'm meant to set this up? All i want is for the server to fire up and be allowed access while its running, then for it to close again when i quit the server, but whilst the second bit comes naturally its the first bit eludes me.

Any help appreciated

Never use a software firewall. They are more trouble than they are worth. I realised this about a decade ago in the days of zonealarm and haven't looked back. Stick to AV, common sense and sit behind your router which will block all ports for you.

this is the problem when running servers, I have to leave the router ports open constantly, leaves room for being probed, so have to have something on the pc end to block it all unless im using the server.

if I wasnt using my main rig for this itd be easier, having a wee Linux server for this sort of thing would be handier, something I can easily wipe clean, but that means money I dont have sadly :(

Presumably you're port-forwarding specific ports from the router, not DMZing your whole internet to your PC? If you are, you really don't need to bother with a firewall. I had Comodo running to let me block certain outgong connections easily but incoming is handled by the router.

It's a shame the comodo UI is atrocious nowadays :(. Try setting the firewall into 'Training' mode (right-click on the sys-tray icon). This mode will automatically create allow rules for anything accessing the internet in this mode.

Obviously turn training mode off when you're done, but it'll make your life easier.

Zonealarm that's a flash from the past, that's the last software firewall I used also

:D

yeah it's specific ports on the router, 25565 and 2302. the router has exceptions set up and its fine for that, but only when i turn the firewall off pc side.

the issue is very much incoming, as folks can find the server, but connection always fails unless the firewall is off completely.

de-activating the firewall and letting folk join then re-activating seems to work [as in they dont get disconnected] but as one of my freinds has a slightly ad-hoc household that folk regularly reset the router on his already poor internet it gets wearysome after the first 200 times.

i'll try the training mode next time i get the chance

Never use? I'd say that's a little over the top. With a software firewall you can be alerted to if you have malware, etc. by forcing it to ask if you want to allow software out.

Does Comodo have DOS, flood, etc. protections? There must also be a log file so if you get a mate to try and connect then see what the log says and post it here. Chances are it's a port that they need to connect to which isn't allowed.

Log files are hell to find, i cant really get my head around it, the specific applications (arma2aoa.exe and arma2aoaserver.exe) have the same rules;

Allow tcp/udp in or out for ports 2301 to 2306 (googling suggested that the server uses more than just the specified port) but it still doesnt work. I've tried a global rule in the past (same thing but for a minecraft server's 25565 port).

Even setting the application rule to allow any port to any port doesnt seem to work.

Atm the only settings i'm not using are the incoming and outgoing mac adresses, but theyre set to allow any.

It's not, the safest is a hardware firewall as long as it's configured correctly.

I'm not saying your wrong, its just it seems appropriate seeing as comodo wont allow connections even when its been told to.
