Hello all

If I have an And A8-6600k overclocked at 4.4Ghz and a Intel i5-4670k also overclocked at 4.4Ghz. Which is the best and why ???

Main point being I want to build a new rig but can justify paying out when I've got something fairly decent at the minute

Regards

Josh

The 4670k is a much, much faster CPU when paired with a dedicated graphics cards.

The A8 is an APU and should offer better integrated performance.

If we say the i5 4670k has a 40% ( Likely to be higher though ) higher instructions per clock then the A8 you would have to clock the A8 to 6.1Ghz to match a i5 4670k that's clocked at 4.4Ghz.

The i5 is much faster as a CPU at the same given frequency as described above (it performs a much greater amount of work per clock cycle), but will cost you a fair bit with a Motherboard change required.

Gaming performance will likely improve with the i5, but only marginally depending on the game. Personally not really worth the swap on a price - performance basis.

What rating to you use to calculate it being 40% Quicker ???

You say "work per clock cycle" how do i find out what my A8 "work per clock cycle" is ???

As above, they're very different chips. I don't place much stock in test suites like that "GeekBench" linked above, but it's definitely safe to say a 4th generation i5 will be faster clock-for-clock than an AMD Richland A8.

The ace up the sleeve of the Richland is it's integrated GPU, so if you compared the CPUs without your 7850 you'd find the Intel would be miserable, but the 6600K probably playable at some low settings.

In the end what you've got is decent as you say and probably does a fine job in most things.

To put it simply, if an A8-6600K had 8 cores at 4.4ghz it would still struggle to beat a 4670K in most CPU based tasks... the main strength of the AMD APU's are the integrated GPU's which are a cut above what Intel offers.

So if you want a CPU to play games without buying an external graphics card then get the A8-6600K, if you intend to buy an external graphics card then it's 4670K all the way.
