Hi all,

I need a few of you more experienced and educated gamers out there to recommend a new monitor, I have a £400 pound budget but may stretch to a little more if needed (£30-£40 ), I mainly game and surf the net on this, although I play on line I would not say I am a good and committed gamer compared to some after reading these forums, I have just built a new system and want a monitor to match.

New system

Asus P5Q Pro Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Reaper HPC Edition Dual Channel DDR2
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz (1333FSB)
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI
Corsair TX 650W ATX2.2 SLi Compliant PSU
Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case

I did want the DELL 2408WFP but all the posts about input lag have scared me off, I am now toying with the idea of a Hyundai 24" PVA or even saving some cash and just plumbing for a TN panel as I will only be sitting directly in front of the screen and using it for my PC.

If you would recommend a larger than 24" tn FOR THE BUDGET I HAVE PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY, if you suggest other routes again please explain why and try to keep it simple for me.

Please debate

Would second the hazro, IMHO with the new 'i' revision it's the best 24" monitor you can get (although I don't get my new one until later this month as the silver model hasn't been shipper over yet...grumble grumble).

are these due in stock shortly as they seem to be saying on the web site that these are pre order, any thoughts on the hyundai or is it just Hazro all the way

OK boys I really do need a bit of help on this, why the Hazro reccomendation and are these due in, has any one else got any other suggestions of other makes

Hazro are recommended as it's the only 24" IPS panel available in the UK. IPS is generally considered the best of the three panel technologies for colour reproduction and viewing angles. It also doesn't suffer the drawbacks of *VA such as black crush and gamma shift.

The Apple Cinema Displays, high end NEC's and Dells all use this type of panel.

It's also a pretty decent price.

Thanks phil, quite a detailed yet easy to understand reply.

Do the IPS panels suffer from the input lag that seems to haunt the PVA panels or have they got any inherent problems that I should know of before I save more money to buy one of these.

Input lag wise, the 24" Hazro has been clocked at around 30ms, which for 24" panels is respectable. I've played a little GRID on my current Hazro and do not notice the lag (I did however notice the 60ms+ of the Dell 2408 - so I'm not insensitive to lag).

If you want lower lag the 26" model has around 16ms IIRC.

Only inherrent problem with IPS is that the black levels aren't as good as on a *VA or better TN's. I discount *VA's having a better black level though as they suffer from black crush, which is where all dark colours appear black. On an IPS panel black is more like very, very, very dark grey.

Unfortunatly no panel technology currently used in TFT's is perfect as they all have drawbacks, IPS though (for my usage scenario certainly) has the fewest IMHO.
