Imagine if every myth, conspiracy theory and urban legend was true. Imagine a world where you can become anything you want to be, without restrictions such as classes or levels. This is the premise for The Secret World, Funcom’s upcoming massively multiplayer online game set in the modern-day real world.

I know it's Funcom and they have the propensity to royally screw up (Played Conan from Head-start for 6 months before giving up due to bugs/content) However I really like the concept, especially the investigative quests. It's still only in alpha so a long way off but I think i'll keep this on my radar.

They do make interesting games with a lot of depth to them though, good stories too.
I just hope they put a lot of attention to detail to their own lore and that which they have taken from real world myths/tales.

Age of Conan was....well, I didn't like it at all, I think it was their foray into making a modern mmo which to be quite honest fell flat on it's face. I do hope this is a step up, they, unlike other companies always seem to try and make MMOs a little different to the rest. I've never seen or played another game like Anarchy Online when it's come to unique players, items, twinking, crafting is a bit so-so.

Yeah, looking forward to this one, purely for the change of scenery. I just hope it isn't all instanced missions, I kind of get that impression from the vid.

Good to see some other types of MMO style coming out, hope it does well as the genre needs a kick in the backside, the 800lb gorilla has been at the top for too long.

Not one I will try as I have to be honest, when it comes to MMOs, I'm a dwarf/elf/wizards and warriors kind of guy. I dont get on too well with machine guns and so forth in my mmos.

face it, when it comes to mmo's, funcom have the market cornered in making a complete pigs ear of game launches, the release of anarchy online back in 2001, was to say the least, a fiasco. Age of Conan wasn't much better.. And I expect TSW to be just as bad..

If you want to make a complete mess of a game launch.. let funcom royally 'funcom it up'.

LOTRO is my favourite game since Pre-CU SWG, and that's quite a feat.

People say this often, I was there for the AO launch and to be honest for 2001 it was pretty good, I didn't complain or mind. But I assume was one of those lucky ones who didn't have crashing issues and I was probably in school when all the downtime happened ;) But it was fixed and sorted relatively quickly.

Of course it's 10 years on and there's and indescribable amount of MMOs out there who have progressively upped the ante of how to make a smooth launch.

I could go on about what AO(and EQ/UO) had that many MMOs these days lack but, that's for another time and another thread.

Bah, akimbo pistols and shooting rifles/shotguns from the hip.

Is it so wrong of me to want proper animations in games? :(

I cannot think of one practical application for holding a pistol in each hand. Apart from maybe staring in a rap video.

they've remade anarchy online then.

How so? Set in modern day world in real-world locales based on illuminati, templar etc..

Like Tombstone said I think MMO's have become rather stale of late, A little experimentation doesn't go amiss. Though as I stated in the OP Funcom really do know how to screw up. Conan could have been great, regardless of what others say, I found the atmosphere in conan to be unrivalled from a game world perspective. The lack of content and bugs wouldn't have been a major issue but the time span between fixing those were inevitably the reason I quit.

It's nothing like it.
Won't even bother explaining why, I did set out a post but deleted it, you can rather tell me why you think it is.
There's nothing in common so far.

Love it "we do away with levels" yet by the looks of it you still level up certain skills/attributes. Its been done many times before so i dont quite see how this is ground breaking. The other funny thing is, the vast majority of mmo players look for regular accomplishments in which to feel like theyve achieved something, levels do just that along with a few others novel ways, scrapping them may have people feeling lost and unenthusiastic about grinding away the next 57 "not really levels" of fireball conjuring.

Benn following this since the viral started ages ago I'm a templar apparently and I can't wait to try it out. Too many mmos too little time!
