Well, there's already snow on some of the mountains in the US so probably time to make a thread for this winter.

Should be an interesting one, for those that haven't picked up in the news, this year has one of the strongest El Nino weather patterns on record which has the potential to produce well above average snow falls in the SW US, possible as north and inland as Colorado. Further North, Canadian Rockies and Montana may experience well below normal snow fall.

Wider effects could lead to cold, snowy winters here in the UK and Europe as whole.

Me?

Looking at going to France in January and then somewhere else in April for 2 weeks still to be decided. Japan was on the cards, but El Nino looks to increase temperatures there, which may turn the legendary power to rain, but I'll need to do a bit more research first I think.

Skiing in Scotland is pretty much making the decision to go that weekend. Can't really make any long range plans for it unless you're happy to do something else if it doesn't work out, either there's no snow or there is snow but it's too windy. Glencoe would have had amazing seasons the past couple of years if wasn't for the wind.

Hope to get down there this year again and see what they've done with the new lifts they got.

Just bought some Salomon Q105's for half price from EpicTV, ski is the same as this years version other than the colour, might have some of last years Q95 on a similar deal.

Was going to get a pair of Rossignol Soul 7 skis but the price was too good to pass on. Just need to get some decent bindings for them now.

Whitefish is long gone now, had one of my best ski days there before they commercialised it, been back since and it's good but I hear they've stalled investment in it now.

A basin has to be one of my favourite places along with Loveland as well. Proper local ski hills that most tourists pass by (eww slow chairs why would we go there!).

Aye, the news flash on C4 made it sound like a British school trip, maybe I miss heard. Terrible regardless. I'm not sure of the specifics but I've never had the impression European but much effort into avalanche control even in pisted areas.

3 dead and between 5 and 20 still missing. Could be a catastrophe. After this length of time it's only going to be bodies they're finding.

Not a member myself, but looking at what you get, on the face of it, it's worth it alone for the off-piste ski insurance if you're into that sort of thing (depending on the details). Certainly worth the £5 over the standard membership!

Aye, been to Les Arcs last year. I tend to just try and explore the entire mountain unless I find something interesting to a bash a few runs out on. You can definitely manage a 4day/2day split between the two.

Is there an easy was back from valandary/ plan piesey to arcs 1800? Mrs will be knackered after a day in la plagne so looking for something easy!

Currently only looks like a lift up or a walk over a blue run.

Where you skiing or boarding in la plagne?
Aye, looking at the map it's all blues back over. From memory though, you would take Grizzly up and then it's an easy blue over to the bottom of Derby and just keep going until you hit 1800. Mostly cat track type stuff if I remember right.

I was skiing. One day we made the fatal mistake of coming back from La Plagne via the bottom of the Plan Leschaux/Bauches lifts. Avoid this like the plague, it's a 5 mile flat cat track. It pretty much finished off one of the girls that was with us. You need to make sure you give yourself plenty of time to make the cable car back, especially if you're in 1950/2000 as you need a few more lifts after that to get back over.

I don't see it as a problem if he's getting professional tuition?

These days to be honest, most of the cool kids these days are skiing rather than boarding. Ski design technology has rapidily improved and surpassed snowboards so there's nothing really you can't do on skis and you avoid the negatives of boarding such as using the lifts, wet bums, and even just being allowed to ride in some resorts.
