The Snowsports Thread 2015-16

20% off lessons there if you book by midnight tonight.

Code is BLACKFRIDAY.

Ahh I missed this but thank you :)

We have decided to get the GF lessons in the new year as Nov/December has just been to busy and she would prefer to do it closer to the time. I think I will take some lessons on board to pick that up again.

I am sat here with such an itch to scratch, kind of tempted to just go to Tamworth this evening but I am not sure if I need a lesson first again. I am sure I will not be a danger and in control but I am not 100% on the rules.
:D

No worries!

Think I'll be over there tomorrow after work.

Basically they make you sign a sheet saying you can perform linked turns and stop safely. The is no actual check of your ability as such.

You tend to see quit a few people getting their bearings again and practising from around half way up the slope.

I've had different equipment every time i've been so far, but bought my own board a few weeks ago so will be using that from now on, hopefully it will help me progress and build confidence.

Jut booked a couple of long weekend in Salt Lake city, will likely hit up Alta and maybe Snowbird but mostly doing some back country in the white and red pine gulches. I found deep snow there weeks after the previous snowfall and it doesn't cost a dime.

Off to Jackson Hole in a few hours. Just doing some recon on some backcountry objectives that are safe for solo trips. They've hd a ton of snow recently so will hit the lift for a couple of days and once everything is tracked out I will go hunt the fresh away form the tourists.

25 Short frontside looks mellow and fun (from 5 minutes), would love to do the back Turkey chutes but would need to let the snowpack settle.

mt Glory is infamous but has a habit of killing people, perhaps by the end of my stay condtions would be favorable/

Had a nice day at Lake Louise last week. Good snow base and about 12 people on the mountain so no queues and good pistes at the end of the day.

Should be going to Nakiska some time in the next few days as well. Smaller resort but only an hour away. Snow should be pretty good as we had some fresh stuff yesterday. :)

Seriously considering Niseko again especially given how bad the snow is in Europe at the moment. Found flights for around 500 euro return.....tempting....

Has anyone been to les arcs/ La plagne?

I was looking at les arcs (hotels at 1800) and it seems pretty cheap/good value and ski in/ski out. are there preferred alternatives?

also does anyone recommend the euro tunnel over flying? transfers seem fiddly

Hopefully the snow picks up!

Off to Les Deux Alpes for a week tomorrow, not the best conditions by all accounts but the snow report saying they should get hammered over the weekend so fingers crossed!

Nice day at Norquay (Banff) yesterday. Was a bit icy but apparently normal, it doesn't look like the runs get much sun as its east facing but the trees block most of the light.

Big shame was the runs are really short, on the other hand I think they need to get to grips with the colour scheme. A couple of the so called blues were damn near vertical - fun, but luckily I hadn't persuaded my other half to give them a go, she's only just started learning. :p

I'm torn at the moment, I want to replace my Salomon 2012s which I've had for like 4 years now and they're pretty good all rounders. 91mm underfoot, 123mm up front and 119 tail. Great on groomers and not too bad in the powder, but use my Line Sick Days for most powder.

There are some sweet Mordecai Line skis I've seen I'm tempted by, but unsure if I should go thinner underfoot.

Off to Meribel (three vallees) on the 17th, so excited!

It will be my first time on my board on a mountain. I've got around 12h on the indoor slope but fully aware this will be next level.

I did a season in Les Arcs, so know it quite well.
There are various different resort levels:

Bourg St Maurice
This is the village at the bottom of the Funicular lift. Great for a long stay, but if you are just going for a holiday, it's better to be up in the resort.

1600
The lowest of the resorts at the top of the Funicular lift and is generally quiet and doesn't have much to it.

1800
Has the most amount of bars, shops, restaurants and nightlife, so it's certainly the place to stay if you are also looking for the apres scene.

1950
This is the newest and nicest looking resort, which was built by Intrawest (the same company who own Whistler Blackcomb). Its a little more on the pricier side of things.

2000
It's the highest resort, but its a bit bland and isolated. It obviously has direct ski in and out to high alpine terrain though.

Additionally there are a few small villages either side of the mountain which all cater to holidaymakers and have lifts that get you into the main resort lift systems.

With regards to the train, you can get the snow train from London all the way to Bourg St Maurice, you then simply walk across the platform, take the Funicular up the mountain and then a free shuttle bus takes you to whichever resort level you are staying in.

The snow trains are only certain times, so otherwise it means booking a number of different trains to get you there. I've done this to get to Geneva airport from Bourg and it was all pretty straight forward.

If private transfers are too steep, there is a public bus service that runs in winter that goes from the airports to all the major resorts. You can book in advance or just go to the desk at the airports.

Enjoy :) - had a great time there years back.

EDIT - just ordered these :D after unearthing what looks like a pair of goggles you would find in a 99p shop reduced to clear basket :o:

Plus got a 10% discount because they didn't have the pair I wanted (the dragon was a different colour :p).

I just got back from Avoriaz. Snow was excellent the last few days, although lower down was still in need of a better base (Morzine and so on wasn't worth bothering with). I had a blast though. Latest first trip of the season in years for me. First week on my new Jones Flagship. A seriously nice, fast and stiff board. Lovely. Completes my Jones quiver along with the mountain twin and hovercraft.

Off to Chamonix next Thursday for a few days and then the following week in the US for work so popping over to the Sierra Nevada for a couple of days in Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows with a mate who lives there.

I have a few days in Meribel in early March and a week in Chamonix in March, just need to figure out what to do in February!
