*** The Sony Xperia Z5 Compact Thread ***

I really like the look of this phone but I'm not sure whether to buy it SIM-free or get it on contract!?!?

The best 24 month contracts I've found are either:

  • £29.99 p/m
  • £19.99 handset cost
  • Unlimited minutes, unlimited texts & 4GB data

  • £31.99 p/m
  • Free phone
  • Unlimited minutes, unlimited texts & 5GB data

Both these are with EE which gets a pretty decent signal around where I live whereas my existing provider, Three, are a bit patchy! (to the point where I have to have one of their home "signal boosters" plugged into my router to get a signal inside my own house!)

Alternatively I can buy the handset SIM-free for £430.00 and then Three have offered me a 12-month SIM-only plan for £9.00 p/m and I'd get unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and 4GB of data!

According to Three I haven't used more that 2.9GB of data per month in the last year so I'm thinking 4GB is probably more than enough!!! (I'm on an £18 p/m all-you-can-eat rolling monthly plan atm)

So cheaper to buy and go with Three at the £9 p/m (£646.00 over 2 years) but with the EE deals (£739.75 and £767.76 respectively) I get to spread the costs (not a huge issue) but also get a "better" provider in terms of signal quality and 4G speeds!

Decisions, decisions.....

Just tried this at the CPW store, is it just me or is the screen not as sharp as the Galaxy S4 ?

Not seen one running myself but it is a 720p display rather than 1080p on the S4 so since you are going from 441 ppi to 323 ppi I can imagine it's not quite as sharp!

First charge 4 hours sot 25% battery left phones gone through installing from scratch in that too. Hallelujah. Man the S6 was a joke in comparison.

What are the owners thinking of the screen?

Fancying the compact, but little concerned it will be too harsh to look at compare to the current LG G3

How do you find going to a smaller screen?

I prefer it to be honest, much easier to use one handed. (I've got young kids)

The battery on this thing is in another league to the s6, camera is much better than the z3, maybe not up to the s6 quite but I haven't had chance to experiment much. The focus speed is insane, easier to take pictures of the kids though.

I had a quick look at the actual handset today in CPW but they couldn't boot it up because of the set-up process apparently! :(

It does feel nice in the hand and it's a little heavier than I imagined!

Very tempted to buy it SIM-free assuming that Three will honor the £9 p/m SIM-only deal they offered me a few days ago!

Is Amazon the best place to buy at £430??

Sony shipping now.

It's fine, looks as sharp as any other. The ridiculous ppi of some is complete overkill.

This.

It's the same with people worry about 2gb ram in phones. I was listening to the Andriod podcast today and they said you don't need no more than 2gb in phones and not for another 2 years. It's just specs on paper, doesn't make a difference to the average user.

How is it a gimmick? I have a wireless charger by my chair/sofa in the living room, one in on my desk, one on my bedside table, one in the office and one in my car... My phone is now almost always fully charged and all I have to do to keep it like this is put it down when I'm not using it. No fuss, don't even have to think about it any more. Now battery life is all but irrelevant.

Isn't it unhealthy to have it fully charged all the time (regarding battery longevity)?. Batteries have a number of recharge cycles, charging it again at 90% to take it back to 100% for example might not be the best way to maintain the battery. I thought with modern batteries it was best to run down to 20% and ideally only charge to 80%. I have a Sony laptop with a battery maintain function and it limits the max charge to 80% and if battery at say 70% when I plug it back in it may not necessarily charge
