Hi, Over the past week, when switching my PC on in the morning it has made a constant loud swirling sound perhaps 4 times now.
Turning the computer off and trying again seems to stop this.
I have looked inside and couldn't see anything wrong, although I am far from an expert.
I assume its coming from one of the fans to generate such a noise but am not sure.
Asus Probe seems to suggest everything is running OK.
I plan on starting the computer with the case off tomorrow, in an attempt to see what is happening.

does anyone have any idea what might be the problem?

The fans might be clocked up with dirt/dust, every 3 or 4 months I get the dyson onto all mine give the motherboard a good clean too. Equipment attract a lot of dust and dirt because of the materials used, they cant operate as effectively under those conditions!

Hmm it sounds like your PSU i think, perhaps try and replace your psu temporarily see if the sound goes.

Will.

Why get a new psu, if its only the fan thats failing. Its not danderious opening a psu to change the fan, cos Ive done it, and Ive even tested it with the off cover off and fan not secured in place to check it worked before scewing everything back together

What you need todo is when your pc is on just stop each fan in turn with your finnger for a second or so, until you find the fan thats making the noise.

OK I think its the fan attached to the case, in front of the hard drives and behind the main power on/off switch.
what fan is this and what would be a good replacement?

thaty just a system fan to pull air into your case. they are prettu generic you just have to g et one of the same size and tyhen decide if you want to spend more on a quiet one or just get a normal one. if you look insid eyou shold see were it plugged in small connector 3 pin or a large 4 pin molex

^^ Yes it will be and should be as this is how Probe is reading it.
Just make sure your replacement fan has the same plug on it and plug it back in the same place.
