The state of games.

I have to say, most modern AAA games are derivative slop. All flashy graphics and no innovation or actual gameplay. Not quite sure why I have a high-end PC when I actually enjoy the smaller indie games more these days.

Doesn't bother me if AAA greed buries themselves in the end. Smaller indie studios are producing fantastic games still.
I've recently been laid up and unable to use my Chernobyl-like main desktop (I've not looked into streaming from it yet), so I have been limited to using my elderly non-gaming business class notebook & mobile workstation (Thinkpad T-495 and an old P50). I've found them surprisingly capable running indie and AA stuff, they both struggle with UE5 titles (the P50 being unable to run UE5 full stop) but even 3D games can be tweaked to look acceptable and play well. It's been an eye opener at what is possible if you temper your expectations.

Making games is very, very expensive and a huge financial risk, it's almost borderline betting in terms of the gamble involved with them, especially in the AA territory.
Funding, long-term and short-term are always problematic and unless you've had an absolute stonking hit that's set you up easily for your next project (if there is one) then without financial help it's difficult in the current climate to be as adventurous as you, or the audience would like.

Staying truly independent is also hard to do, but also can give you the most creative freedom as you're not solely looking at the return on investment that public entities do but even Indie Devs look at trends as they want something that will appeal and sell well, even if it's not going to make you millions.

My daughter has my Series X now. I never play it anymore and never bought any games for it and that was nearly 5 years ago since that launched. Xbox 360 was peak for me and the only games I have played that are modern are the Nintendo AAA Switch games.

Online gaming doesn't really bother me now as I much rather play something with a story.

I have been going through a bit of back catalogue gaming sesh myself. Introducing my kids to older games at the same time. I got a PS2 with Vice City Stories and Liberty City Stories for my birthday and bought my son Metroid Prime 2 and 3 which we are going to play together.

I was a Nintendo fanboy back in the day so never had PS1,2 or 3 but in my old age I am going through the back catalogue of games when I fancy something.

Likewise on the PC side of things I was a BF whore ever since Vietnam playing all of them daily up until BF6 which was just utter turd. BF3 was the peak for myself.

I think like Hollywood you have the case where game studios have just become too corporate now which just stifles making a quality product anymore.

I very nearly got a Nintendo logo Tattoo in 1997. Very glad I didn't now
