Just an idea for my GF really, whos just gone off to uni!

All you students/cooking gurus could put together a massive thread full of cheap, tasty and wholesome meals so everyone who goes to uni in the future has some where to turn when theyre bored of Spagbo! :p

No ideas myself, but would be nice to see plent of nice recipies with price break down and total cost etc etc!

Take it away chefs!

Sausage , beans & mash

packets of smash and a tin of beans with sausages in

follow the instructions on the packaging

200g basmati rice
15g butter
1 large onion, sliced
1 bay leaf
3 cardamom pods
small cinnamon stick
1 tsp turmeric
3-4 chicken thighs, skinned boned and cut into large chunks
2 tsp curry powder (I use Jalfreze)
60g raisins
550ml chicken stock

Fry the onions in the butter along with the cinnamon and the cardamon pods for 5 minutes.
Add the chicken and the powders along with the bay leaf and fry for another 5 minutes.
Add the rice and the raisins and stir in so it's all coated with the curry.
Add the stock and bring to a fast boil then lower it to a simmer for five minutes.
Then turn off the heat and leave it for ten minutes. It should be ready after that.

I'll usually sprinkle some chopped almonds and coriander over it.

Total cost should be under a fiver to feed two to three people, so long as you have some of the spices etc.
Oh and it takes just half an hour to cook and it uses just one pan.

surely the above is more than the 30pence in coppers most uni students have after the first week?

Chilli Con Carne

3 Parts, 1 Pan, 1 Microwave

£1.50 (£1 on offer, Uncle Bens Microwavable rice)
£2.50, 5000g Lean Mince beef
£1.40 Mild Chilli Con Carne Sauce

Brown the mince, Pour on Sauce, Mic the rice. Done in under 10minutes and should be enough left over for a bit of lunch the next day if you reheat it.

That sounds awful :(

Edit - Microwaveable rice for a student? Buy a box of Tesco boil in the bag basmati rice and get 10 times the amount for less!
