The Terminator

The film I've watched more than any other. I saw it in the cinema in early 1985 and bought the video some months later. The video, long before sell through videos, cost me £54.75 and I still have it somewhere.

Watched it last night, still a great film but some bits have aged soooo badly :( Can't help but wonder if I'll be looking at T2 like that in ten years time.

Each time I watch T2 I'm amazed at how well it's aged. The effects are good enough to handle what they attempted, so there's no bits where it's really obvious that things are faked. If you compare things like when he removes his eye in T1 with when he slices his arm open in T2 you can see how much better they were able to handle things in T2.

The T1000 also manages to consistently look good, so while the effects aren't brilliant by today's standards they don't look inherently unrealistic.

The beauty of the CGI in T2 is that it's mostly in-your-face: it is used to create effects that aren't meant to be even remotely "natural". This removes the main problem of using CGI in other films, where you tend to look at some amazing stunt work and just assume it's CGI trying to create a natural look. The only bit that grates, and did at the time, is the "exploded" T1000 at the end. Otherwise it still looks modern.

Exactly. I have no idea what a mimetic poly-alloy looks like, but I do know the T-1000 morphing effects and the reflections on the liquid metal look cool even by today's standards.

Same here. It's my fave film and I borrowed another vcr to make a copy when it came out on video in late 1985.

Just a pity it's a kids film compared to the first.

This is the one DVD i own that i dont keep on the shelf. it stays upstairs next to the bed, so when the mood takes me i can just pop it on - never get bored of it.
