The tesco value thread

When I was a student I worked in Malton Bacon Factory, which basically supplied all major (and smaller) supermarkets with pork products. The only differences in the value range are that the cuts of meat don't make the required weight limits to be included in the 'normal' range. Other than that the only difference is the label.

The Tesco cola is nothing like either Coke or Pepsi, try mixing it with whiskey to see what I mean :P

Look at the product recall notices in the newspapers for an idea of how widespread this is, last time humous got withdrawn IIRC 8 different supermarkets & some brands were affected.

The same with a lot of stuff. Used to work in spar and we sold our own branded vodka, smirnoff and glens vodka. Our own brand was made in the same factory as the glens and just rebranded. Try to tell this to some of the customers though when it's on a special and it's "nah, your own tastes like ****. I only drink glens". I do try to help :P

I always buy Tesco value eggs instead of other expensive free range eggs. Not sure if happy chickens lay eggs with more nutritions but they taste the same to me. Read somewhere that free range eggs have more yellowish yolk but I wonder if that's because the chicken has been eating too much insects.

No they aren't. P&G don't make own label products for anyone.
This is the thing with the kind of discussion we're having here. On one side you get people who will defend the value brands, and on the other side you get those that will defend the premium brand, attempting to dispell the "myth" that they are repackaged premium brands.

The downside is that most of the "facts" are based on hearsay and "my cousin's dog's uncle worked.." style connections. The people who buy value will try and make themselves feel like they are getting a better product by saying it's a rebranded brand label item, and those that buy premium will try and make themselves feel ok about spending the extra money.

My personal opinion is that premium can be worth it... in general. I don't know a huge amount about the food industry, but for tangible items I can, for example, feel that a £200 pair of shoes are better than a £20 pair. Similarly, I think I can taste that genuine Coke is fuller than Tesco cola.

Who knows tbh!

My monthly shop is probably roughly 15% Tesco value, 70% Tesco 'normal', 5% Tesco 'finest' and 10% brand name.

My money saving tip of the week:

There are generally 4 price levels for any given product -

1. Supermarket value
2. Supermarket own label
3. Brand name
4. Luxury brand name

The next time you buy an item, pick up the level below your usual one. IF and only if you don't notice a deterioration in quality then continue to buy the cheaper product. Even if you change 25% of your typical shop you will save a decent amount of money.

I know for a fact that P&G don't make own label products as I work for them...

Food products are different though, as many of them are made in the same factories. One of the big cake manufacturers supplies most of the major supermarkets, however the cakes they supply to each one are not the same as they each specify the quality they want.

Pretty sure the value biscuits contain far more sugar and salt than the more premium products which puts me off a bit. I always get value chopped tomatoes and kidney beans for my bol./chilli as there really doesn't seem to be a difference. Don't tend to get much other value sutff though.

I might try this I usually buy branded products or Tesco's finest. Thinking about it I do spend a fortune on food.

tesco value beans are pretty tasty, i prefer cheap beans sometimes.

No longer a supermarket man though I buy my food from specialist shops usually though, meat from butchers, veg and spices from greengrocers, cheese, cooked meat, pepperoni, whatever from a deli. Only thing i really buy from supermarkets are bulk booze, bog roll and bits and pieces.
I work fairly close to millets farm too so I sometimes buy stuff from there.
It's damn expensive but i like to eat well.

Coke > Rola Cola by the biggest margin possible, if that's re-branded Coke then i'll eat my own right testicle.

Going off the example made in the OP... I work at McVities and we make some biscuits for the Tesco Value range. Unlike some other customers who use a generic recipe, Tesco actually have their own. Even so it is still very cheap and nowhere near the quality as say McVities own, Sainsburys (whos value range is the same as their standard range) or M&S.

I'm sure that in some cases it is very similar to non-value stuff. Most of the time it's not though. Just because it is made in the same factory does not mean it is of the same quality or even made to the same standards.

Value Weetabix = Fail
Value butter = Win
Value pasta = Win
Value kitchen towel = Win
Value soft drinks = Epic fail
Value beans = Epic fail
Value eggs = Win
Value chicken breasts = Win
Value Scotch eggs = Win
Value sausages = Fail
Value Red Leicester = Win (and I HATE most cheap cheese)

Geek!

I might try a value shop next time, see how it goes.

I guess a fair ammount of this may just be all in our heads. If you've always bought the more expensive thing, then conciously go out and try something cheaper, your brain may see a difference because its expecting there to be one, so it an say 'There, we haven't been wasting money'.

Wouldn't touch value bog roll with a barge pole, though.
