The tesco value thread

Being a student doesn't mean I have to make sacrafices on the quality of food I eat.

Its well known that theres certain value foods that are the same quality as the 'normal' stuff, sometimes they are just repackaged or do not meet the visual requirements(size/shape etc) of the supermarket.
Theres no sacrifices for certain things, most noticably fruit+veg and certain meats(more discression)

Why's that? Does being a student always mean you have to watch your money and buy value products? I know that when I'm at uni, I'll still buy brand name products, and not value.

Students generally dont have money flowing out their ears, I would say it was in the best interests of 99% of the populations to maximise what they get for their money.
I still bought brand name products when I was at uni, though I used my head and bought the unbranded stuff that was the same/cheaper, I have a go at my mum when she refuses to buy anything but the most expensive stuff.

I know one thing I would not touch, Tesco value sausages unless I was sure they where from the same line, I will only eat quality sausages now, anything else has crap in.

Thats true. Having worked for ASDA for 3 years I can understand from the fruit/veg point of view. But 9 times out of 10 the stuff is just sold in bulk.

Smart price meat is a no-go. Same with smart price ready meals...

Tesco Value Jaffa Cakes are pretty good. The only difference to McVities is that the orange jelly on top is slightly smaller, so you get a different cake to chocolate to jaffa ratio - but it's still good :)

Every now and then I'll have a quick compare between Sainsbury's value stuff and the regular stuff and more often than not I'll find that the value stuff is not only cheaper, but according to the ingredients and nutritional value list, its better for you as well!

Ay I can understand that, Things like tinned chopped tomatoes etc I see as being a no brainer for cheaper brand stuff etc too, of flour perhaps. That kinda stuff. Ofcourse value/smart price chocolate, can never forget that tasty stuff. For me its either lindt or that cheap rubbish :p

Iv looked at some of the meat and had some bacon too, the bacon actually looked a lot better than branded stuff. More fat on it, nothing a pair of scissors cant fix. Sometimes some of the value stuff just needs a bit more effort putting in before cooking.

Ready meals are generally a no-go anywhere, lets face it :p Lets face it they will hardly save you the pennies, which was my point about value :p

Because they put less of the good stuff in!

I'd rather eat something that tastes better and costs more, and happens to be a bit unhealthier.

Taste the difference lines are a good example.

Think we'v got 2 sets of people here, one set is saying value stuff is bad one is saying its ok sometimes, id like to emphasise im saying value is generally only good for raw ingredients which go towards making something.
Obviously value pre-made stuff is generally gash

As you all probably already know, tesco value gorceries are often (but not always) just rebranded expensive brands. For example, obviously there is no tesco value biscuit factory, it is just a factory elsewhere that they stopped the production line and changed the packaging.

I should know, I collect Biscuits from their distribution centre in Knowlsey and deliver to Tesco RDC's all over the UK. :)

One of the things I do buy supermarket names of rather than the brand are drugs!

I check to see that they contain the same amount of each drug, for example Anadin Extra, the only thing that can kill my migraine headaches, has certain milligrams of Paracetamol, Aspirin and Caffeine, so make sure that the supermarket brand has the same dose, and it's a good few quid cheaper.

The only difference I notice is that the cheap ones aren't coated, so I have to break them in half.
