The tesco value thread

Surely when you eat them valued bolognese or lasagna, you could see the artery and veins coming with the minced beef. Major appetite destoryer for me.

No posting stuff about competitors I thought...

Tesco do all sorts of "Value" computer related kit you know.

Tut tut. :p

Speaking from the point of view of somebody who delivers to Tesco's, you'd be surprised how many of the "Value" brands are produced by the regular mainstream suppliers, same product, different label & price.

I wouldn't buy 'value' meat either, but baked beans or chopped tomatoes, come on. You're stretching your analogy there...

I don't like baked beanz!!! :) I am Spanish, that will probably explain why :D

About the chopped tomatoes, we always use organic. We don't like pesticides but I am sure you are right taste wise! :)

This is the bit I'm really not sure about, it might come out of the same factory as the branded product, but for example looking back at the guy who worked at Sara Lee's the recipe for M&S cakes was seriously different to the one for other supermarkets. The price cuts have to come from somewhere, even if they reduce their margin the easiest place to do that is with the ingredients and quality.

To be honest, I'd much prefer to pay a little more for higher quality produce that doesn't come in such fancy packaging.

The amount of wasted material that you get in a weeks shopping is incredible.

I can't speak for Tesco's stuff, but with margins on most food so slim these days, no supermarket is giving away anything they don't have to. The days when supermarkets were prepared to loss lead on many items are gone. Now if you're paying less, you're getting less one way or another.

Of course if people are happy eating the stuff that's been rejected for other product lines, that's fine. Personally the only Asda Smart Price line I ever buy regularly (and I've tried quite a few out of curiosity) is their ginger nuts. But they're definitely completely different to the Asda own brand or any others I've tried. I think they hide the cheap ingredients with more heat in the ginger... which is what I like about them. Great dunkers.

It's a tricky situation. A lot of packaging is necessary just to make sure it reaches us in halfway decent condition, or so that it stacks well on shelves (another place where damage can occur).

Packaging is also important for luring us into buying as well. I'd have saved a fortune in disappointing pizzas over the years if I'd seen the contents of the fancy box!

Not Tesco's but, a good example...

Asda's equivalent of the Value range, in this case Orange Juice, is produced by Princes drinks and from what I'm told by the workers there, the only difference is the packaging & price!

Value oj is nasty though, concentrate stuff is imo.
Always buy the fresh stuff with bits in it, not that much more expensive and much tastier and better for you.

i wouldn't touch tesco value/tesco frozen chicken with a bargepole. they aren't "from the same line" as the finest range as if you look at the origin they are sourced from mainland europe/brazil/asia where more battery chickens can be kept per metre than UK regulations allow (hence they are cheaper).

tesco standard fresh chicken is from UK, though I personally opt to pay the premium for tesco free range chicken :)

Tesco value fresh chicken is exactly the same as their standard chicken, however less time/attention is taking to the cutting of the meat.

Don't bother with Tesco's value bread (it would be easier to eat a 16 year old shoe than a value loaf that has been open for a few hours) also whilst most of their value stuff used to be really good you can now tell that they have started to cut back on the quality of their products as well as increasing the prices as their stranglehold on the market has increased. Anyone looking for meat should go to Morrisons they have a far better selection and a better quality lvl than most other supermarkets

Yea. I began to get suspicious when tescos value bread wouldnt get moldy. Must be made from styofoam or something with no nutritional value, or chock full of chemicals.

Aldi/Lidls F.T.W!

Probably already said but Tesco Tuna is just John West or Princes repackaged for half the price.
It was actually already said that it most definitely wasn't.

How can you not tell the difference. Proper canned tuna is chunks or stake, Tesco value is mushed up rubbish, which I swear has other fish in as it tastes of oily fish as well as tuna.
