Im in the sam boat, £500 max budget. I would say 3070 seems a good choice here if you can get one for 500 (since the 6800 slides seem to indicate it will be on par with 3070), however doesnt the 8GB vram worry you?

Techradar are showing the exact conversion price from $650 which is £500 but not taking into account the 20% VAT we have to pay. There is probably an import duty so the total price we pay should be around £620-£630.

People should be happy Amd is competing at the top again, look at the 6900XT and yes I think the 3080 would have been around a grand if Amd didn't have something to compete with it.
 
£500 is where the price should be but Nvidia have taking the mick for a while now so Amd are just following suit. With demand like it is get used to it because it’s here to stay.

Yep, still seems 3070 for me, although as you say, 8gb of vram is a real worry seeing as I tend to upgrade every two gens.

Although I have a free sync monitor, so an AMD card would have been good.

Only bit that looks true for is the 6900 which used SAM mode to match/beat the 3090 the 6800XT results are largely going to be at most 1-2% different CPU wise.

The presentation even stated the nvidia cards were tested with a 5900x.
 
We now have real choice in the market which is fantastic.

But AMD have played a blinder with the Zen 3 synergy. If you're a potential 3080 buyer you'll surely want the best cpu performance? So that's going to be Zen 3. But now you have the added dilemma of losing performance by not buying AMD? Very clever.

Not necessarily. If AMD can keep the pressure up over a few generations and gain market share then the nature of competition will drive down prices, barring the 2 companies price fixing with one another.
