Howard's one (S/C MX5) looked brilliant, but it was about the same pace as my car - probably slightly quicker.

Now my car could not even consider to keep up with your last Focus ST so I'm not sure how you want to look at it like that.

I haven't kept tabs with Howard's SC'd 5, but iirc it's an M45 conversion which usually adds 30-40% resulting around 160-170bhp unless further work is done. Whilst a very useful amount and great for day to day use it is similar in power to your hatchback and will therefore be similar in a straight line whilst rolling. 220-260bhp is a significant amount of extra power in something that weighs just a tonne.

Find me a reliable 260bhp MX5 that will leave me plenty of change as you say, and I'll buy it to at least give it a chance :)

260bhp in an MX5 sounds epic.

Shimmy, that certainly appeals to me - I'm a huge fan of the MX5, but I know three people who have all had supercharged MX5s (one of them has had two infact!) and one who had a BBR, and they've all got rid of them within just a few months of doing the conversion/getting them, which screams 'issues' to me.

I have this very same issue with FI'd MX5's and its part of why im not going down that route. Also they only have 2 seats which rules them out here to begin with...

Over priced apparently. Should be around the £5-6k area. Not exactly going to leave change however it is a Mk2.

http://www.mx5nutz.com/forum/index.php?showuser=152 on the MX5 Nutz forum buys, maintains and sells them and gets a few FI ones through his hands. Might be worth a call to talk about true running costs and see what he has at the moment.

Finding one at 250/260bhp and giving you plenty of change is not quite what I said. ;)

Having said that a Begi turbo at 250bhp sold for £3500 a couple of months ago, but was more function over form which I suppose doesn't matter much if it's a track car. I don't frequent the mx5 sites nowadays, but mx5nutz should be where to look.

I've had a quick look and found this: http://www.mx5nutz.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=61085

Yes it's not 250bhp now, but it only needs an intercooler and some different pulleys with some better management to get it there which somewhere like P5 can do. It's far more common to find the M62 charged 5's for sale at around 200-220bhp as it costs that little bit more to get to 250bhp, and the threshold on stock internals is 260bhp+ from what I remember.

If you're genuinely interested sign up to the site and declare your interest and intent, they're a friendly bunch and will be able to you more than me.

A lot of money for an S14.

Now this is mint, low mileage, cheap and close enough to warrant buying, converting to manual and still save over £1k on that £5k example.

But you've got to go through the ball ache of actually converting it.

You need to ask yourself are you wanting a car or a project?

I'm not saying I'd actually do it (I'm not that keen on the 200SX), but I'd rather do that than spend £5k one a modified one with twice the mileage.
