The Top 7... PR disasters

Fine - but it looks like you are in the minority from world wide sales of BR which are going through the roof already

Minority? I seriously doubt it!

The vast majority will have no idea about HD, let alone HD movies and Blu Ray.

Most people DONT give a damn about HD DVD or Blu Ray including the majority of gamers. I totally disagree and id go as far to say that most people are happy with DVD releases, DVD prices and DVD quality..

Thats me. Never will I buy into a media again like I did with DVD. Hundreds of films I never watch. Yeah they are going through the roof, they sell one in feb, two in march thats double the sales. Wow sales are going through the roof.

Neither media format interests me other than when they become burnable and I can use ghost to clone a HDD image onto one.

Depends on how you look at it really

£200 for a console (absolute bargain)
£200 BR player (complete bargain again)
£25 for inbuilt hdd and wireless - tremendous value

Sorry, these comments are starting to play like a broken record.

I think the thing is, that people would have at least liked to have the personal choice for each of the components, rather than having the Blu-Ray format forced down their throats.

damn god Frank your a real laugh...

Frank i want answers, you have in the past attacked me on views i have that dont agree with yours regarding Sony matters. In fact if you are going to try and turn the tables on "what microsoft do" then can we all have examples of HOW Microsoft have acted in the same way or used games to sell their upcoming systems but the games never appeared. Or anything that even remotely is as stupid as 4D graphics and real time weapon changes used during a worldwide presentation. Sony have made such a farce out of it that a vast majority find it amusing when their console now isnt flying off the shelves.

Show us the evidence and i will gladly then agree your right. The whole point of my post is not anti Sony its anti Sony policy, theirs a difference you fool.

I guess I see the PS3 differently to a lot of people on here. I don't see it as a games system first and foremost, for me it's a cheap entry into getting a BR player. Anything else it does is a bonus for me. Sure it's a marketing disaster if it's being sold as a game system but it's not. BR is a massive thing for Sony with a lot of money to be made should it win out over HD-DVD, they're using the PS3 to get a player out there in a lot people homes... To me it's not being marketed as a simple games machine, which as can be seen in here isn't making a lot of people happy! If you can't afford it then don't buy it yet. The PS1 and PS2 weren't exactly cheap when first launched, it was only when prices dropped that everyone and their dog went out and bought one. I do think Sony have got their work cut out to get top spot this time round, but lets not forget the power of playstation, like it or loath it, there are people out there who will buy it because of the name. Maybe not now because of the price, but I bet they're waiting...

Fact is Sony seems to have based its whole PS3 strategy on:

a) Playstation brand loyalty and expecting people would buy a **** in a box if it had playstation written on it.

b) A Hi Def format which I doubt 75% of their current userbase has the equipment to even view.

It has the potential to be a good console but Sony's out an out arrogance throughout the last 2 or 3 years practically expecting millions of people to hold fire till they turned up and then belittling M$ and Nintendos consoles at every turn while not exactly setting the world alight with their own ideas.

compared to £50 rrp for most MS games

Ok look at it just as a games console, but that doesnt stop it being a lot more than that (with the price to match)

If you dont want it, dont buy it simple as

Most 360 games are £40 now - even cheaper in some cases.

Oh and regarding the minority comment - is this why most shops in my town centre have every inch of their windows devoted to "WE CAN GUARANTEE A PS3 FOR LAUNCH DAY" - this doesn't seem like we are in the minority at all to me.

Myself I'm happy there are plenty for launch day, much better than the Wii fiasco (which I am still waiting for) and 360 shortages. Cheers you lot for not buying one ;)

Your right Sony are not even calling it a games machine its an entertainment device. People however percieve a Playstation to be a games console and thats what they expect from one.
Blu Ray is relying on PS3 as a console to help sell it as much as Sony is relying on PS3 to install Blu Ray into millions of homes.
The problem i see is that each market isnt strong enough, ie game line up is still lacking at least one AMAZING game well one thats exclusive to Sony. Blu Ray is seen by most as a gamble format that still might not succeed and isnt really exciting enough buyers nor has it a big enough catalouge yet.

Amazing profit can be made from PS3 and Blu Ray / disc sales longterm but the strategy isnt right the support isnt good enough and the demand isnt widespread enough at £425.

If it was £300 that would be a different matter, price is always a factor.
The question is will 360 continue to out do Sony on a games level and will Blu Ray catch on quick enough.

Personally i feel untill Blockbuster is renting Blu Ray its not going to happen

For £300 they would no doubt fly off the shelf, I wonder how much loss they are making on each unit now though? I bought an Xbox on launch day when they were £399, they did drop the price though and I got 2 games and a controller from MS. Perhaps Sony will follow suit (doubtful)? I like my films and basically for the price of a standalone BR player I have a 360 with HD-DVD drive and a PS3, looks like a bargain to me! A few BR players have dropped in price of late though (discontinued models), hopefully not too long before we get a dual format player and I'll probably dump one of the consoles when that happens.

cant agree more. blu ray is an expensive luxury . sony basically forced it onto people so that the film division of sony would be nice and happy. lets not forget that sony makes most of its cash from films.

seeing as they have thier own new disk format they need to promote it as much as they can so its gets forced on joe public as part of the game system.

said joe public buy consoles to play games ( mostly ). i did back in the day when i owned a ps2 at the start use it as a 2nd dvd player in the bedroom , but it was as a games console i bought it.

i'm seriously thinking about getting a hd dvd player addon for my xbox but i'm not sure its worth it as i dont have a 1080p tv. so that begs a question :-

1. hd dvd copy of casino royale - £25 ( somehwere around that ) or dvd version £7 ( we all know where ).

i think i'd know what i'd be buying

blu ray is something that wasn't needed on a games console. give the option

also from reading what hi-fi mazagine from time to time ive noticed the build quality on these new formats has been reported as shoddy to say the least . and they are way more expensive than a ps3 console. dont hold out much hope on the drive unit imo on the sony

If people dont want to spend the money keep ya ps2 or Xbox and wait for the price to drop. Same goes for Pc gamers keep ya 9800Pro if your going to moan.
