At present, what is the best case to have?

I'm going to upgrade my Antec sonata and I'm looking for a case that's suitably large so that it will accept watercooling and a 8800gtx, and will accept future upgrades.

I'm either considering an akasa eclipse, a V1000, a silverstone and the zalman fatility thingy. I have a budget of £250 max.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

The Fatality one is not all that great on paper, not tried one yet but it certainly is not screaming of huge potential to me considering its price.

Are you after the best cooling case, the best built case or a combination of both?

Eclipse / PC7+II are the two cases that fit into the cooling and quality level.

v1000+ / v2000+ are ideal for watercooling, although the air cooling performance are to the same level as the Eclipse, but still more than adequate for a top spec SLI rig.

Its a case of how cool do you want to be.

Yes, a combination of both. In what respect would you say the V1000+ is ideal for watercooling compared to the Eclipse? Is it just a case of the size, or...?

Vote for the Lian Li PC-G70 case here.

More traditional than the V range of Lian Li's, space for dual PSU or any amount of Watercooling you want internally. Understated looks that I've come to really love.

Currently modding mine to fit a Thermochill PA120.3 rad into the Roof - ample space to do so :D

Hopefully have a project log up soon.

Just think its easier to mount a rad in it, at the bottom and place hard drives in enclosures.

G70 is the ultimate case for watercooling, although for air it is very highly priced for what it is. (A large empty shell that needs a fair bit of CFM to rival an Eclipse / PC7+ on air.)

Totally agree with the comments about air-cooling - this is definitly a case for Water - if I was going to stick with air, I think I would have purchased the Eclipse.

I did consider mounting the Rad in the bottom, and would have hidden any 'accidents' during modding, but the problem is with airflow for the rest of the case.

By having the Rad in the roof, I have three fans pulling air into the case, then down below I have 3 120mm fans (front, rear, gpu) expelling air. Add the PSU (which will be mounted at the bottom) and I have slight negative pressure in the case, meaning I'll get slightly better temps IMHO for those components not water cooled.

The "ultimate" case has to be the Soldam Black Knight but good luck getting one!

I actually have the opportunity to get one as I know someone in Japan who could ship one to me but it would end up costing me something like £400, a tad expensive for a case lol....And as I plan to WC pretty soon there is no way I could bring myself to cut into it.

wow mamma just looked it up lushhhhhh
though i have to say the ultimate case is one that hasnt been built for me
i would want one with the looks of a wavemaster but the cooling of a eclipse

What about the Lian Li A10? Doesn't look much like a Wavemaster (not a million miles off though), but is supposed to be a great all round case. Cooling is also very good from what I've heard, with the only minor issue being some concern about HD cooling, but I don't think this is a problem unless you have lots of drives. It's a great performer all things considered. Not cheap though, but you get what you pay for with Lian Li.

Thermaltake Mozart TX is a monster (70cm tall) ....room for two 120x240mm rads as standard, up to ten 120mm fans, room for a secondard mini-itx system, 5x 5.25" bays, 7x 3.5" bays, psu drives and motherboard are all in seperate 'zones' ect ect ect. As far as cooling goes, its pretty damn good. dont look bad, either.

The Lian Li S80b rivals Windy's offering, if your looking down a £400 illegal Windy then take a looksie at the S80.

What's illegal about it? As for the S80, I'm not into its 80's retro look, plus it I've already decided to get a PC-A16 when the price is sensible anyway.

They are not certified for EU sale, can not import them legally as they have not been tested for EU standards in safety, although they would pass with flying colours.

I think you're right about the fact that it's not possible for a business to import them as they have no EU Mark, but can a private individual not import one provided (s)he paid for it at point of purchase ie. (s)he already owned it prior to importation? And then you couldn't ever resell it (not that you'd want to, of course).

Ultimate cases;

Soldam Windy Black Knight
Lian Li v2000
Lian Li PC-201
Lian Li G70
Lian Li S80
Silverstone TJ 07
Silverstone TJ 09

There are a few more I could add to the list, but im not due to them only having 80mm fans. Im sure you would be more than happy with any of the ones listed. I know I would be. :)

dont forget this one :)

If you've got the cash and are serious about needing the space you could always get a MountainMods case - even doubles as a coffee table ;)

Seriously though - if I could afford it...

Id disagree that the V1000 is great for water, the eclipse would be better suited IMO, wider (important), less obstructions with a top mounted rad etc etc, probably good for a 120.1 setup, but most people want more (i assume at least ... a 120.1 wasnt good enough for me, and i promptly upgraded when i had water...

A v2000 on the other hand is pretty much ideal for water :)
