The ultimate noob in jailbreaking

Hi all,

Having been swamped by google results and different options, is there anyone that could be so kind as to spend a few minutes just giving me a step by step instruction on jail breaking an iphone?

It's an old iPhone 3G which I'm giving to my little sister.
It was on O2, but I'd like to get it unlocked to vodafone.
(It's an ex-contract phone so I own outright).

It's running OS 4.2.1

Other than that, I'm lost. Would so appreciate any help!

If its an ex contract, O2 will do it for free. Give them a call. In fact you can unlock it via their unlocking page somewhere on the o2 website.

Why would you want to do it via a software method when it can be unlocked free by a real method instead of some application?

Perfect! I didn't know O2 unlocked it for you. I've used their online request form.

All methods use limera1n, however you go about it is user preference.
