Hello All,

So I am thinking of upgrading a few parts come January. Seeing as the misses old PC went pop this gives me a perfect opportunity to "donate" lots of bits to her (and buying myself new shiny's).

So this is kind of a dual build kinda thing.

The misses will be playing games but not a hardcore gamer like myself, so as long as her games run good she is happy.

My Current build is

i7 3930k 3.3GHz Hex Core OC @ 4.6GHz
Asus P9X79 Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3
16GB Corsair Vengence Ram
120 Corsair SSD
2 x 3TB WD HHD
2 x 4GB EVGA GTX 680 (SLI)
Corsair H100 Water Cooled
1200w Corsair AX1200 PSU
CoolerMaster Haf X Case

So,

The Misses needs a completely new tower (She has the mouse, monitor, keyboard etc).

Here are my T&C :-D.

I want a fully watercooled Rig.

Want Faster RAM (As Mines only 1600mhz I think) (I Prefer Corsair)

A New Botherboard (Prefer Asus)

I would like to keep my CPU If possible but its an option.

A New Case
Mine is fine but I want a bigger one (Or same size) with more inside viewability as I want to see the watercooling and internals,

My GPU's are fine but If I would gain a significant increase from a single newer card vs my 2 EVGA 680 4GB Models, then its an option. (NVIDIA Only)

my budget is about £1500 but do not want to spend that if I can help it.

And depending on what new parts I get / stuff I pass down to her decides on what I need to buy for her.

Any info or advice would be top.

if not planning to upgrade to jan then really no point in any specs now. tech/prices can change daily never mind 3 months down line.

I understand what your talking about.

However I do like to get things roughly laid out, then alter as I go along.

Is it worth upgrading from X79 to X99 ?

I have made 2 possible routes.

Sticking with X79

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus Rampage IV Extreme Black Edition Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard £359.99
2 x Corsair Vengeance Pro Red 32GB (4x8GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Quad/Dual Channel Memory Kit (CMY32GX3M4A2400C11R) £339.95 (£679.90)
1 x Corsair Obsidian 900D Super Tower Case (CC-9011022-WW) £274.99
Total : £1,331.38 (includes shipping : £13.75).

Or If I decide to go the X99 Route

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel 5930K 3.50GHz (Haswell-E) Socket LGA2011-V3 Processor - Retail (BX80648I75930K) £431.99
1 x Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C15 3000MHz Quad Channel Kit (CMD16GX4M4B3000C15) £429.95
1 x Asus Rampage V Extreme Intel X99 (Socket 2011) DDR EATX Motherboard £329.99
1 x Corsair Obsidian 900D Super Tower Case (CC-9011022-WW) £274.99
Total : £1,483.42 (includes shipping : £13.75).

What's the best option given there is a small price difference ?

Is there much difference between these 2 boards ?

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus Rampage V Extreme Intel X99 (Socket 2011) DDR EATX Motherboard £329.99
1 x Asus X99-Deluxe Intel X99 (Socket 2011) DDR4 ATX Motherboard £299.99
Total : £639.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

I'm put off by the Red on the ROG board as I am building a green rig.

Also I am looking at purchasing a new headset, keyboard and mouse.

Currently have:

Razer Blackwidow Ultimate Elite 2013 Keyboard
Razer Mamba Mouse
Razer Tiamat 7.1 Headset

And I am looking to change to

YOUR BASKET
1 x Sennheiser G4ME ZERO Premium Gaming Headset - Black £189.90
1 x Corsair K95 RGB MX Red Switch - Limited Edition 'Sails' Logo (CH-9000060-UK) £159.95
1 x Corsair M65 RGB Black Gaming Mouse - Limited Edition 'Sails' Logo (CH-9000053-NA) £59.99
Total : £419.44 (includes shipping : £8.00).

And advice is welcome :-)

This is OTT :)

You could keep your rig with a few changes, possibly upgrade your GPUs (SLI 970's?). Then donate the 680's to your missus and give her something like an i5 4690k/i7 4790k bundle. The X99/X79 is simply pointless for gaming, as it's not worth the benefits (sometimes even slower!) than something like a 4790k

Will she be just gaming?

Spending 1.3K by going from X79 to X79 is daft.

You may as well go the full thing and swap to X99.

The Extreme board is aimed squarely at extreme overclockers.

Also 3000MHz RAM im not sure has been fixed yet on X99 without having to use a 1.25X BCLK strap.

Yep Its over the top, I always go OTT :-D.

Well She will only use it for gaming and general stuff. Only real taxing thing she will do is game.

I'm willing to donate anything down to her no problem :-), Is the GTX970 any better than the GTX980?

Right, I see, I might do overclocking down the line but not just yet.

I see that going x79 to x79 at the cost is silly. But would upgrading to X99 be better off by much ?

Cheers for the help.

Well as stulid said, what do you do on the PC? If you are only gaming, there's literally no tangeable benefit of going to X99 tbh, and you may as well just donate your GPUs to your missus and get her a new mobo, case, psu, ram, cpu etc, and you keep your X79 and drop in a couple of 970s or something like that
The GTX 980 is faster than the 970, 980 is pretty much the best of the best at the moment, but price/performance the 970 cannot be ignored :)

The PC is Used for heavy gaming at 2560x1440, 3D Modeling, Animation (3DS Max, Maya, Mudbox, Rendering) and some video editing.

Cheers

There we go, now there's a reason to upgrade (sort of :) )
Do you know whether the exact programs you use benefit from the 6 core 5820k/5930k or 8-core 5960X core amounts?
I know 3DS Max uses multi-cores so that could be useful - however saying this you already have a 6-core soo...

With your earlier specs up top ^^ you were at that £1500 limit and didn't even have GPU's in there :( So you may well have to spend more to get a brand new X99 build in there?

Go for the 5960X then (i have :D from X79+3930K) so have experience with the platform and overclocking.

Many programs like can use either CUDA (nvidia card) or OpenGL (AMD) to also help accelerate the work load.

I was looking at the 5930k... the 5960X is about £300 more than the 5930k.

Thats quite a difference.

I will try and find the Cinebench results.

Here she is,

This was also done on slow DDR4 RAM, so im around 80-100 points off other people with decent kits.

So what does your 4.6GHz 3930K get?

OpenGL is dependent on the GFX card.

I have a GTX980, let me just fire it up for you.

Edit,

155.2

So what are your thoughts on that then?

If you didn't blow £430 on RAM and got a £200-250 kit instead you can get closer to affording a 5960X.

Well, I wanted 16gb of high speed ram. and to be honest I think the ram would make more of a difference to that of the CPU in terms of price ?

I asked TeamAU (bunch of ozzie overclockers ) about DDR4 the other night.

I said would you spend £250'ish on a Kingston 3000Mhz kit or get something else and overclock it.

They replied go for a Gskill 2666MHz kit as its well binned (they said the £200 Geil not good quality).

With that in mind I've put my 32GB DDR4 kit up for sale today in the MM for £200 to then buy a Gskill kit.
