As you all may know, in January the VAT will be increasing from 17.5% to 20%, are you guys dreading this or not?

For some reason I am, as I think a lot more things will be expensive, and you won't get the value for money you do now.:(

Just like the drop to 15% wasn't really noticed, jump to 20% means nothing.

Value for money you do now? Er its not value for money at 17.5 percent so duno what ur on about.

I didnt notice much of a problem when vat went from 15 to the usual in food shopping or general buys. It will only effect big purchases like £80 + where the vat gets a bit large.

So since im broke and only buy things dead cheap i should think i would be fine. If i was rich i.e have a job lol then i would be a bit worried if i bought expensive things on the occasion, as you would if you have the money.

Might get that car before December 31st then !

2.5% when it comes to thousands ARE enough for a new Bluray player or 2.

You're only going to notice when it comes to buying your next monster gaming rig or plasma telly. Then again you might not even notice it then. I certainly saw no benefit at all when it was lowered to 15% so not really concerned about it going up to 20%.

20% in January with the post-holiday sales won't be noticed anyway. If you're going to buy anything like a plasma T.V. I'd guess January is as good a time as any. Later in the year, unless outlets maintain continual sales, then yes I'd say 20% could be noticable on some comparison goods. I'm not too worried about it though. BAU for most of us I assume.

Week in week out, yeah 2.5% is just meh, what planet do you live on?

With familes and people cutting back, this is not a good sign.

the thing with the vat drop to 15% most placrs didnt even use it just used the original price but made out it was only 15% vat
it was only companys selling things that got helped out

Great for people having a pay rise but how many people aint getting a pay rise but are being faced with redundancy, Cameron showing his true colours. He his getting wage no matter what he does.

At least all the retail shops will do well before the rise!

BUY NOW BEFORE THE CRAZY % RISE!!!!111!!!! OMG OMG!!!!

NO TIME TO SPARE!!!!

will notice it on fuel more than anything plus the 1p rise in october another 2.5% will put petrol over 1.20 a litre for sure!

Yeah I mean god forbid he increases VAT to try and help fix the economic deficit. And yep, Cameron is making everyone redundant too, great post cheets64.

Didn't notice the drop, unlikely to notice the rise when it comes to VAT, and it's easily avoidable by altering spending habits.

I hope the country never forgives Labour for what they have done... Sadly as this is the third time in a century and idiots keep voting them back in, I have my doubts....

It would have made far more sense if the Tories had introduced a tax designed specifically to alter people's spending habits - i.e targeting luxuries. As it is, the rise to 20% will have most impact on the poor.

I suspect that this is not an accident since these people would not be expected to vote for the Tories anyhow.

Didn't the Tories suggest before the election that they would NOT be increasing VAT
